Owl About First Grade
We hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break with lots of time to relax and connect with family and friends. We've had a great first week back in the classroom. Our students came back to school well rested and ready to learn. It was so nice to see their bright, happy, smiling faces again! In class this week, we set new learning goals and celebrated Halfway Day (the 90th day of school). We have now competed "half" of our first grade school year and we are on our way to become second graders. The second half of our school year is going to go by very quickly. Although we have more to learn, we will take time each day to enjoy all of the wonderful moments we have together as a class.
Appreciations: Thank you again to our amazing room moms who organized another outstanding party for our class. The winter party was a perfect way to celebrate the holidays with our classmates. The kids had a great time! Thank you to all of the parents who donated supplies and came in to help out. We appreciate all of you!
Wow!!! We felt so loved, spoiled and appreciated this holiday season! We are so grateful for all of the cards, treats and gifts we received. It was so nice of you all to think of us and our families. We truly appreciate all of the kind, thoughtful gifts and gestures. We are so lucky to have such a generous class.
Reading: The author we are studying this month is Jan Brett. We are working on comprehension, story retelling, along with comparing and contrasting many of our favorite Jan Brett stories. We are learning new strategies for solving tricky words and how to continually build our fluency while reading.
Writing: Our writers are doing great with informational writing. We've had a lot of fun with writing "how to" pieces. We will be moving on to writing animal reports. Our study of penguins will begin in class next week. Students will demonstrate their learning by choosing a penguin project of their own to present to the class. More information will come home on Monday.
Math: We had an introduction to fractions this week as we celebrated Halfway Day. We continue to learn different methods for adding and subtracting larger numbers. Our students love working together with their Math partners to solve word problems and practice their math facts.
Wish list: Our class is currently out of Clorox wipes, white copy paper and hand sanitizer. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. :)
