Welcome to

Mrs. Pires' ELA (English Language Arts) Class

I have been teaching English language arts for 18 years at MSP.  I grew up in Plainville and went through the Plainville school system.  I have a 11 year son who keeps me busy with his love of sports.  He plays soccer almost year round on the U11 Plainville United team and Foundations, plays on the Colts Peewee football team in the fall, plays PAL basketball during the winter, AND the Robins major league team in the spring. We also have a dog named Milo who is an active two-year-old, but a "good boy."

In ELA classes we focus on the new Smarter Balance testing which will take place in May.  Students read three novels during the school year, A Long Walk to Water, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and The Giver.  We will focus on important aspects of reading literature.  In addition, students will focus on the writing process and write informational, persuasive, and narrative writing pieces throughout the school year.  We strongly focus on citing text evidence and elaborating on the evidence and details.  We also emphasize using higher level word choice.  Lastly, students will be reading an independent reading book of their choice throughout the school year and completing a weekly reading log.
