Dear Parents,
I am very excited to get the 2018-2019 school year underway. I cannot wait to get to know you and your child and to make this a successful year for them. I have told my parents every year that it takes both of us working together to ensure your child a successful experience in first grade. I am available anytime to address concerns that you may have. I will let you know my plan time in the first parent letter.
Parent letters come home every Friday in their folders. Your child will have 2 folders that will be sent home. They will have a RED folder that will come home every day. This will be their reading folder. It will have a reading log in it that will need to be signed each evening so that I can monitor their reading at home. I understand that they will not be able to read a book by theirselves in the beginning, however, beginning the first full week of school, we will have sight word books that will be sent home a couple of days for the first 3 weeks. This will be Kindergarten review. I will be assessing the on the Thursday and Friday that we start and then I will let you know if they will need extra review at home.
I do not send homework home with them other thatn reading. Your child will need to read for at least 15 minutes at home each evening. In the beginning, you may read with your child and maybe let them pick out words that they may know. I will send home a list of words that we will be working on throughout each week. I will let you know when we are finished with Kindergarten review and begin regular first grade work. Then they will have spelling words to practice during the week.
There is one thing that is really important in 1st grade and that is attendance and being here on time EVERY day. We do all of our morning work together in class. If they miss or are tardy a portion of the day, they are missing out on vital instruction time. I cannot stress this enough. I understand them getting sick and missing, those things cannot be avoided. But times have changed and there are more things that they are held accountable for during testing.
We also have a snack time in class every day. It is in the afternoon. You are responsible for sending a snack each day in their backpack. Neither the school nor myself will provide a snack for them. With food allergies becoming an issue, your child may not share snacks or trade with other students. If your child has a food allergy, please let the office know for school lunch purposes.
We will celebrate birthdays on the last Friday of the month. We will celebrate summer birthdays during the month of August. You may send snacks for your child’s birthday during that time. I will send out information on the dates each month in the parent letter.
There is a link on our classroom page as to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary as to the things that will be covered in our classroom this year. I will update the webpage with the spelling words in case you child fails to get them home. The webpage will be updated each month with the monthly newletter. If you do not have access to the Internet, you may request a paper copy from the office.
I hope that you will be very supportive of your child’s learning and the school. It is not good for them to hear negative comments made about the school. I will be more than happy to meet or talk to you on the phone regarding any area of concern or questions that you may have. I am looking forward to a great school year and being your child’s teacher.
