Welcome to Kindergarten at ASK

Kindergarten is a time of new beginnings, of making friends, and learning lots of new things each and everyday.  Our days will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities for not only academic growth but social as well.

We will learn all about letters/sounds, high frequency words, and will be doing lots of writing activities, too. We will also be learning all about numbers, building on important math concepts including sorting, counting, graphing, classifying, addition and subtraction.

The children are always proud of the work they create and are anxious to share their new skills. Families can help at home by reviewing the assigned high frequency words, reading to and with their child daily, and encouraging them to write and draw.

We believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year we will communicate with you through this website, notes, telephone calls, monthly newsletters, quarterly reports and parent-teacher conferences. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Each month a different class will be highlighted in the "Announcements" section of our grade level webpage.  Please check out the amazing opportunities that our ASK Kindergartners experience on a daily basis.

3 Key Ideas for Parents about Common Core

  1. Thinking Deeply: The Common Core emphasizes critical thinking: analyze/discuss/evaluate/justify/explain everything. Really thinking deeply is hard. Let it be hard, and help them by talking it out.
  2. Integrating Learning: Common Core emphasizes learning across disciplines. They spend more time working together with different settings, structures and tools. Problems and solutions happen everyday in the real world.
  3. Showing How they Know: Common Core emphasizes proof and evidence.  Long gone are the days of worksheets, fact memorization and skill/drill. The new tests will require students to explain how they know the answer.
