Course Description:

This semester long course is designed to encourage middle school students to express, create and respond to their ideas through the visual arts. The class is a project-based course designed to have students create works of art in various media and techniques. Problem solving art projects are selected to focus student learning on the elements of art and principles of design. Students will express their ideas through art while developing an understanding of art as a visual language, which is communicated throughout history and all cultures. Areas studied will include drawing, painting, perspective, color theory, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics. A sketchbook for class journaling is required.

 

 

Course Competencies

 C1. A student will understand that the creation of art is built upon engaging in self or group expression

 

 

C1.1- I can apply visual art concepts and functions to solve visual art problems by using analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

C1.2- I can visually communicate an understanding of how human knowledge is recorded in symbol systems and demonstrate an awareness of context.

 

 

C2. A student will develop the ability to communicate in the language of art forms through the intentional use of materials, tools and techniques.

 

 

 

C2.1- I can use media, techniques, tools and processes with skill, craftsmanship and personalization to communicate meaning.

C2.2- I can demonstrate personal responsibility and safety in the planning and process of creating works of art

C2.3-I can document personal progress by maintaining a portfolio of my artwork, identifying work’s strengths and weaknesses.

 

 

 

C3.A student will demonstrate the ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate art.

 

 

C 3.1- I can participate in self evaluations and peer discussions, talking and writing about what I think or feel about my own artwork and the artwork of others. 

C3.2- I can identify where my work can be improved and suggest possible solutions.

C3.3- I can analyze and comment on how ideas and meanings are shown in my own and other’s work.

 

 

C4. A student will make connections between the visual arts and the other disciplines.

 

 

C4.1- I can analyze and utilize concepts and contents of the visual arts and other arts disciplines, the humanities, or the sciences, to expand the meaning of their artwork.

 

 

Student Expectations

o   All students are expected to be on time. The second late class will earn you a 20-minute detention.

o   Respect yourself, your classmates and our art materials and facility. This space is used by many and you will need to take the time to clean your space for the next person.  Everything has a home. Please put things back where you found them.

o   There is no food permitted in the classroom. Water is acceptable in a bottle that can be closed. Please keep your cell phones, Ipods and other electronic devices turned off and out of sight.

o   You will use a pastepaper sketchbooks, which you will bring to every class with a pencil. This will be your sketch journal for writing and drawing your thoughts.

 

 

Policies/practices: Proficiency is determined when a student exhibits consistent performance in each benchmark of the assessment rubric .

Proficiency must be demonstrated by a body of evidence, not a single assignment or activity

There are Four Competencies for Visual Art Grade 7 with Nine Performance Indicators. To pass a Competency, students must average a 2.5 or better on the Performance Indicators Rubric for that Competency.  To receive Credit for the course, students must pass all 4 competencies.

Example: Competency #2 has 3 Performance Indicators (1.1, 1.2, & 1.3). The student must average a 2.5 in each to pass the competency.

Students are given the Course Competencies and Performance Indicators, along with how they will be assessed in each Performance Indicator, on the first day of class.

Each Unit Students will be assessed on a variety of Performance Indicators.

 

 

Safety Expectations:

The student agrees to obey all safety rules and regulations concerning tools, materials and equipment in the art room. The student agrees not to place themselves or others in danger by their actions or behavior (horseplay, etc.)

1. Creating a paste paper sketch journal

2. Form: Paper mache figurine or mask

3. Line: Basics of Cartooning

4. Color: Endangered Animal Collage

5. Perspective: 1 point perspective of a room

6. Form: Ceramics containers

7. Value: Self Portrait utilizing a drawing grid

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS AUTHORIZATION

“The showing of movies and videos must be limited to a specific educational purpose.  General selection criteria should include quality of the overall work, fair and accurate representation of the facts, the reputation and significance of the writer, director, and/or performer, and critical acclaim of the work itself.”

Visual Art Grade 7 students will occasionally view instructional videos on associated techniques.
