SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

2018 - 2019


AFL-CIA of Massachusetts is sponsoring it’s annual scholarship program to high school seniors who compete by taking an exam on labor history on Wednesday , February 6, 2019. The Exam will consist of 30 multiple choice questions and 1 essay question. See Ms. Boyle for a study guide and application. Students must fill out an application form online at: . If you are interested in competing, you must sign up in the guidance office before Friday, December 14th.


American Legion Oratorical Contest is available to all high school students who are citizens or lawful permanent     residents.  All contestants must deliver a prepared oration of at least 8 to 10 minutes, which is based on the Constitution of the United States.  The Principal or Guidance Counselor must certify the contestant’s age and the fact he/she attends PHS by signing this form.  Applicants should contact the local American Legion Office for more details.  Application Deadline is December 31, 2018.


Berkshire Bank 2019 NeXt Gen Scholars is awarding a total of 16 students from Massachusetts $2,500. Students who have academic excellence, are committed to community service and volunteerism, and possess respect, integrity guts, having fun and teamwork are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, students must: 1) be a US citizen, have a total family income under $100,000 (or $50,000 if you are independent), and are pursuing an undergraduate degree from a two- or four-year non-profit college or technical school. Applications are due: January 31, 2018 before 12:00 am.


Big Y Scholarship Program will award over three hundred scholarships totaling more than $250,000 to the most academically outstanding students in the Big Y market area.  To be eligible, a student’s permanent residence or school must be located within Massachusetts or Connecticut.  These scholarships are available to Big Y customers and Big Y employees and their dependents. Elks Massachusetts Assoc. Scholarship – All students pursuing a 4 year degree after college may be considered for this award which will be based on academic standing, leadership, citizenship, and financial need. Elk’s Massachusetts Vocational Scholarship Program is offering $1,000 conditioned upon enrollment of the student in a vocational/technical school, a junior college, or a community college. The gran can be used towards tuition and fees, room and board (only living on campus) and book and supplies. It may not be used for general living expenses. Directions for filling out the application:


1) Application (original copy attached) this must also be filled out by the student along with a signature from a Lodge exalted ruler, secretary, or scholarship chairperson, 2) A letter by the applicant explaining why he/she should be considered for this scholarship, 3) A letter by the applicant’s parent/guardian or other person having knowledge of the facts, presenting a picture of the family situation and showing the applicant’s family background, 4) academic record or work record, 5) up to two letters from educators discussing the applicant’s ability, work habits, leadership, personality, and integrity, 6) up to two letters from a responsible person not related to the individual who can attest to the character industry, disposition, and general worthiness of the applicant. Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" Scholarships is open to high seniors planning to attend a 4 year college, a U. S. citizens, display outstanding merit and have exhibited leadership ability. To apply, visit: The deadline for student applications is: November 15, 2018.


Hamilton Relay Scholarship offers a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior in MA who are deaf, hard  of hearing, deaf-blind or have difficulty speaking to assist their goals of continuing education. To apply, students must submit an application, write an essay, and provide one letter of recommendation. Applications are due January 18, 2018.


The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking to recognize students 5-12th grade that are making meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service. To apply, please visit: OR Student applications are due by: November 6, 2018.


Sons of Italy Grand Lodge of Mass.  Scholarships are available to students attending a 4-year college (including vocational and/or technical).  All will be awarded on the basis of scholastic ability, character and activities.  Some of these will go to students who are children or grandchildren of members of the Lodge, and some will be awarded to students without Lodge affiliation.  Applications must be postmarked no later than the February 1, 2019.



Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund is offering scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 for four years.  Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, rank in the top 20% of their class, have combined SAT's of 1000 or better or ACT composite of 22 (High School), and demonstrate skilled writing ability.  Student should also have substantial financial need and a copy of your high school transcript.  You must have decided which college you will be attending.  Application can be found on the Stephen Phillips Scholarship web-site at 



Veterans of Foreign Wars are sponsoring the Voice of Democracy Contest.  Applicants have MUST have a 3 to 5 minute original written essay, recorded on a standard cassette tape or CD on the topic "OUR HOPE FOR TH FUTURE” Essays will be judged on originality, content and delivery.  If you are interested in participating: Give your name to Ms. Valenti and then submit your essay neatly typed and tape recording to Ms. Valenti in the School Counseling Office by Wednesday, Oct. 24th.

Wells Fargo Scholarship Program for People with Disabilities is offering a $2,500 scholarship to a student who has an identified disability (defined as someone who has, or considers themselves to have, long-term or recurring issue that impacts one or more major life activity), have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and are enrolling in a accredited 2 or 4 year undergraduate program.
