In this unit...
Students will understand that...
There are many ways to represent a quantity, but the best way is based on the problem in front of you.
Equations and inequalities are true statements.
Students will keep considering the following questions
What is the best way to represent this number?
How can I use numbers and symbols to create true statements?
Students will know:
a fraction names equal parts of a whole.
equivalent fractions represent the same part of a whole.
a unit fraction, 1/b, represents the quantity formed by one part of a whole that has been partitioned into a specific number of equal parts.
there are infinite number of fraction names for each point on a number line.
a fraction can represent the distance from zero on a number line.
if two fractions have the same numerator, the fraction with the lesser denominator is the greater fraction.
if two fractions have the same denominator, the fraction with the greater numerator is the greater fraction.
the numerator tells how many equal parts are indicated.
the denominator tells into how many equal parts the whole is divided.
Students will be skilled at:
using concrete and pictorial models (including strip diagrams and number lines) to represent fractions greater than zero and less than one with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8.
justifying fraction comparisons of the same whole using symbols, words, objects, and models.
solving problems involving partitioning an object or a set of objects into groups of two or more using pictorial models (denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8).
applying the mathematical process standards.
decomposing a fraction into the sum of unit fractions.
determining the fraction represented by a specific point on a number line between zero and one.
representing equivalent fractions between zero and one using objects or pictorial models (strip diagrams and number lines).
comparing fractional parts with the same numerator or denominator to determine relative size.
solving problems involving sharing an object or sets of objects among two or more.
naming fractional parts of objects or sets of objects.
Vocabulary:
