Faculty Showcase

This is a short list of long-term projects that we’re currently working on with faculty or have completed in the past.

Vocational Nursing Project - One of the biggest challenges for nursing faculty is the clinical evaluation and documentation of student nurse progress. The FRC has been instrumental in creating an online clinical evaluation tool which now allows for weekly written real-time clinical grading and feedback. Weekly Feedback is critical in ensuring student success, and an efficient documentation system is essential to effectively guide a student to achieve clinical course objectives and SLOs. This tool, powered by google forms, allows the students viewing and comment access to their clinical evaluation record at all times. As students move through different clinical sites and instructors, their progress records are also now accessible to all instructors. This promotes individualized clinical guidance and continuity of teaching and learning between clinical sites.

Cosmetology Project - In the past, we have had some problems keeping track of the Cosmetology students accumulated hours and practical procedures. Students need to have a certain amount of procedures and hours in order to apply for the State Board exam. Before we had the timecards on Google Sheets the only way we were tracking everything was on a hard copy.This resulted in frequent confusion and important details slipping between the cracks etc.Since we have been using Google Sheets there is a more efficient tracking system for both instructors and students to track and check each other's calculations.

Esthetician Project  The Esthetician student files are one of the major components of our program.  The state of California requires a specific amount of theory hours and practical hour.  Our  school is mandated by the state to prove that our students have fulfilled these requirements.  These time cards are our proof of training and completion of the program.  The google sheets lends the student access to their individual time sheets via the internet.  It is illegal for students to remove their hard copies of their time cards from the cosmetology building.  The time cards are kept with teachers and highly monitored as this is our confirmation to the state that we are adhering to mandated requirements.  Before we had google docs the students had to ask our office manager to pull the hard copies from their individual files to see their progress.  With google docs students have the freedom to access their cards at any time to see their progress.  As an instructor we are able to double check our manual inputs and keep optimal record keeping along with a saved accounting of their progress, and in case a students hard copy is lost or damaged we can look into our google docs for the current student progress.  Thanks to the FRC, this has been a huge project that seemed daunting at first but the FRC has made the transition smooth and easy for us to understand.  I recommend this system for programs that have similar requirements like ours.

Associate Degree Nursing Project - In the ADN Program, we use Google Drive (specifically Google Sheets) to document the students’ evaluations in clinical (hospital) each week. Google Drive allows us to efficiently document the students’ performance in an organized manner. Most importantly to us, it allows us to interact with the student quickly about their performance, because they are able to access their evaluations immediately. Therefore, the student knows exactly what they are doing well, and what they need to improve upon before their next clinical shift. We also use documents to track the skills that each student is proficient in. With our Google Documents, any faculty can access the evaluations at any time and are able to “sign off” and evaluate the student easily, without needing to pass along a stack of bulky papers. Students are only allowed to access their own files. These files have really streamlined our evaluation tools. Many thanks go to the FRC for getting this rolling.

E 195 Video— Ellen O’Connor and Peter Aguilar, Physical Education/Life Fitness – The main purpose of the PE 195 video program was to provide an “on demand” teaching component to this self-paced course. The course features 42 different exercises classified into 7 muscle groups that are all designed to improve strength, balance and flexibility to assist persons in completing their activities of daily living and functional performance. The exercises can be done at home as they focus on the use of body weight and minimal equipment as training mechanisms.

The goal of the LFC is to assist students in becoming self-managed exercisers. Our goal with this video is 1) provide these teaching techniques in the LFC at all times the LFC is open 2) to provide an opportunity for students to take their work home (ie DVD for purchase in the campus bookstore) and 3) to put it in moodle at some point where students can “steam” the information as they progress through the course.

PURPOSE: The webblog is a place for interaction/dialogue, reading and writing. It is a place (an event, a gathering, a sharing) where students build their self-esteems and boost each other’s confidence as writers and readers. In this environment students bring women to the center of the conversation and recognize their strengths. As recognized readers and writers they support each other and take oral histories and, along with their facilitator, they follow writing instructions and create narrative essays.

Based on information gathered while doing my dissertation, I found that “fun” described what the students wanted as a part of their learning. And, “fun” meant a lively environment that valued them as participants in their learning, an environment that encouraged dialogue and creativity. So, because I believe that it’s necessary to incorporate the needs of the students and their constant use of technology, I decided to create a web/blog to enhance literacy development on all levels and various ways.

Web-based Grammar Tutorial — Lou Spaventa & Sheila Wiley, English Skills

The idea behind this tutorial is to help students understand and apply standard grammar usage to their writing. We do not assume that they know English grammar. We will attempt to teach them some grammar, just enough to improve them essay writing. We will do this step by step.

Student Learning Outcomes Initiative — college-wide project

The SBCC Student Learning Outcome (SLO) project is in its 3rd year. It came about because WASC (Western Area Schools and Colleges), our school’s accreditation agency, now requires all faculty and colleges to demonstrate that their passing students have achieved the outcomes specified by every department for each of its courses. Within the next 3 years, all faculty will have to include SLOs in their Syllabi and measure their achievement.

Itunes at SBCC — college-wide project

The purpose of this project was to provide a different means for teachers to distribute course materials using a system that is familiar to many people. A number of faculty have begun to upload pod/vcasts as well as PDF files to our SBCC on Itunes site.
