Getting a Error Message in YouTube?

posted Sep 22, 2016, 8:41 AM by Luke Bilger

A lot of you have reported issues when playing YouTube videos - you may see a black screen, then get an error message, asking you to try again later.  You are probably receiving this message on Chromebooks, but you may also see it on MacBooks as well, and it does not matter if you are logged in to a Google Apps account or not.  So far, the most fix for this issue has been to update the Chrome browser (or Chrome OS on a Chromebook) to the latest versions available.  On the machines where you are getting this message, please make sure the OS and browser all up to date.

To make sure you have the latest version of the Chrome browser on your Chromebook follow these steps:

  • Open the Chrome browser

  • Click on the three dots on the upper right-hand corner

  • Click on Settings

  • Click on About Chrome OS - middle of the window in blue

  • You will see the version in the middle the next window

  • Below the version you will see a box (Check for and apply updates)

  • If you are not on the latest version (53.0.2785.103)

  • Click that box it will check and install the latest version

  • It will ask you to restart the Chromebook.

To make sure you have the latest version of the Chrome browser on your MacBook follow these steps:

  • Open the Chrome browser

  • Click on About

  • It will start looking for updates and install them

  • Once it has completed you will see a relaunch button click on that and it will relaunch Chrome.

If for some reason you receive an error, just close the browser and open it again and you should be fine.

To make sure you have the latest version of the Firefox browser on your MacBook follow these steps:

  • Open the Firefox browser

  • Click on About

  • It will start looking for updates and install them

  • Click the button “restart to update”

If for some reason you receive an error, just close the browser and open it again and you should be fine.  If you experience repeated or widespread issues accessing YouTube issues, please contact the IT HelpDesk for support, providing as much detail as possible.
