How to enroll Chromebooks

Please follow these instructions for first-time Enrollment of your new Chromebooks.

OUT OF THE BOX:

I. Turn on the Chromebook Network Connection Setup: Chromebooks will need to be connected to the Internet in order to set them up.


Go through the first few setup screens before entering any accounts. You will need to click a Cancel link when it says you can’t connect to the Internet and it will bring up the District’s wireless log-in screen: Log into the wireless network as yourself and continue to the Enroll section below.


II. SET THE TIME AND TIME ZONE IF IT IS NOT CORRECT!

(Look for it in the lower right-hand corner. You have once chance to do this. If you don't do it now, once the Chromebook is enrolled, you will need to use the Chromebook Restore Utility to reset the Chromebook in order to change the time and time zone.)

III. Enroll Chromebook Devices: Each Dell Chromebook has been purchased with a Google device management license. This license needs to be registered to the District domain BEFORE THE DEVICE IS SETUP WITH AN ACCOUNT.

Steps to Manually Enroll a Device
Anyone can enroll a Chromebook. There is no longer a need to use a special admin account or to claim Chromebooks enrolled by a District account.
  • Turn on the Chrome device and follow the onscreen instructions until you see the sign on screen. Do not sign in yet.
  • Before signing into the Chrome device, press the key combination Ctrl-Alt-E. The enrollment screen appears.
  • Enter your SDP Google account (name@philasd.org) and password.
  • Click Enroll device. You will receive a confirmation message that the device has been successfully enrolled.
  • Record the device's serial number in a spreadsheet to give to the school Google Admin. They can keep this information for their records.
  • Logout and Shutdown 
  • Turn the Chromebook back on, sign-in using your District username and password  
  • Open the Chrome Browser - open any web page and wait 15 mins 
  • Logout and shutdown.  During our process, the Chromebook will be registered in the wireless database.   
  • If you accidentally create a user account before enrolling the device, you will need to use the Chromebook Recovery Utility to put your Chromebook back into a state where the management license can be associated with the device. See the Recovering Chromebooks link for further information.

Why enroll Chromebooks

All Chromebooks in the district, including donated Chromebooks, are required to be enrolled to the philasd.org domain for management. 


The benefits of enrolling devices into District management are:
  • Enrolled devices will be automatically registered to the District's wireless network.
  • Consistent settings will be applied to all enrolled devices (dangerous settings disabled, etc.). This allows the district to keep up with new features and changes within the Google environment. 
  • Lists of enrolled devices can be easily viewed and printed for future inventory management.
  • Enrolled devices have a greater chance of being located if lost or stolen.
  • Devices must be enrolled to be valid for online student testing.
  • Devices must be enrolled in order to use future classroom management systems.
If a donor wishes to purchase or give Chromebooks to your school, please encourage them to use the District’s existing contracted option (Dell Chromebook 11), which already include the necessary management license fees and which our IT professionals are prepared to support. They may reach out to our sales representative at Dell. 

If the donor prefers to purchase Chromebooks from another vendor, please ask if they will also include the inexpensive management license for each device for the philasd.org domain. Please note that not all chromebook models offer the same performance on the District’s network.

Many Donors Choose vendors that sell Chromebooks also sell management licenses. Please be sure to add this to your "cart" if using Donors Choose.

If your donated devices do not come with management licenses, they are available for purchase through the Technology Price List for $24.43 per device (https://sites.google.com/a/philasd.org/price-lists/dell-price-list/chromebooks).

Not enrolling Chromebooks into District management limits the amount of support available. 

How to recover Chromebooks

  • Login into a functioning Chromebook with your philasd.org
  • Go to the App store and search for the Chromebook Recovery Utility
    • Download the Chromebook Utility
    • Using the Chromebook Recovery Utility
      • Identify your Chromebook
      • Type in the model number of your Chromebook to get the correct recovery image. You can find the model number on the recovery screen if your Chromebook isn't starting up.
      • Click the Continue button.
      • Insert your USB flash drive or SD card
      • Use the dropdown menu to select the appropriate storage media.
      • Click the Continue button.
      • Create a recovery image
      • All of the data on the recovery media will be deleted if you continue.Make sure the media you'd like to use for your recovery is listed.
      • Click the Create now button.
      • The tool will then create the recovery image on your selected media. Don't remove the flash drive or SD card while this is happening. After you see the message saying that your recovery media is ready, you may remove it from your Chromebook.
  • Reinstall Chrome OS
    • At the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen, insert the recovery media into the USB port or SD card slot on your Chromebook.
    • If you want, you can reinstall the operating system without seeing the error screen by going into recovery mode. Press ESC+REFRESH, then hold down the Power button.
    • The operating system will install automatically. When it finishes, you’ll see a message to remove your recovery media.After you remove the recovery media, your Chromebook will automatically restart.
    • Please follow the directions for enrolling your Chromebooks again.
  • Because all of your data has been cleared, you’ll need to sign in to your Chromebook as you did when it was new.
  • Don't forget to set the time zone, date and time before you do anything else!

NOTE:  A Chromebook that is NOT enrolled will show saved or local accounts.  If accounts are saved to the sign in screen, the Chromebook IS NOT enrolled.  If you do not see "Managed by philasd.org," the Chromebook IS NOT enrolled.
