Course Overview:

 

     In this introductory college-level course, students are given the opportunity to explore and carefully analyze a broad and challenging range of nonfiction prose selections, deepening their awareness of rhetoric and how language works. Through close reading and frequent writing, students develop their ability to work with language and text with a greater awareness of rhetorical structures and strategies, while simultaneously strengthening their own writing. The course is organized according to the requirements and guidelines of the current AP English Course Description; and, therefore, students are expected to read critically, think analytically, and communicate clearly both in writing and speech.

     This course will take a thematic approach to the universal ideas of education, identity, gender, race, class, and culture, and ethics. Students will frequently discuss their readings and writings in class. In addition, students will maintain a journal in which they will reflect upon and answer questions about the assigned readings. There is an extensive amount of writing which reinforces exposition, argument, and analysis. Moreover, students are expected to revise and rewrite in order to produce high quality work with minimal errors. As students move through the writing process, they will be given instruction to help revise and improve sentence structure, organization, cohesiveness, and vocabulary in order to produce quality work.

     This course equates in rigor and difficulty to a college-level course in composition.  Therefore, students will be required to take more responsibility for their own critical reading and writing skills than they may have done in past English courses. Students are expected to commit to a minimum of five hours of course work per week outside of class. Often this work involves long-term reading and writing assignments; therefore, effective time management is pertinent. As a result of the demanding curriculum, students must bring to the course, sufficient command of mechanical conventions and an ability to read and discuss prose. The workload will be challenging but appropriate to a course at this level.

Students will be introduced to the rhetoric of the English Language and engage in a variety of tasks to successfully analyze and utilize language.

Most essays are first written as in-class essays and graded as rough drafts.  Rough drafts are self/peer edited and revised before students type the final copies.  Both the draft and final copy of essays are entered in this section of the grade.  As the year progresses, writing will be timed to reflect the AP English Language exam structure.

Assessments (quizzes, tests, and projects) ...............…40%

Quizzes are primarily given to check for the basic understanding of assigned readings and vocabulary. They will consist of multiple-choice questions aligned with those on previous AP English Language exams and constructed response items.  Constructed response items may be based on texts read and studied in class as well as new material that students analyze for the first time.
