Download SSDR3 Phase 3 Data Products

ESO has now published the first 4 years (April 2012 - 2016) of reduced data products from PESSTO. Follow the instructions below to download the full data set, collectively known as SSDR3. See here for the ESO announcement of the latest SSDR3 Release of PESSTO public survey data.
A summary of the data releases to date:
  • Release Version 1 (January 2014) included all EFOSC2 and SOFI spectra from PESSTO Year 1 (which we call SSDR1)
  • Release Version 2 (September 2014) is all of Release Version 1, supplemented with all SOFI imaging data from year 1   (also called SSDR1)
  • Release Version 3 (August 2015) now includes EFOSC2 spectra and SOFI spectra and imaging from Year 2 (now called SSDR2. Note that this data release in the ESO Science Archive facility by definition includes all of SSDR1)
  • As part of SSDR2 we have also released a catalogue of transients and a table of multi-epoch photometry for published objects for which the photometry campaign is complete.
  • Release Version 4 (December 2016) now includes EFOSC2 spectra and SOFI spectra and imaging for PESSTO Years 1-4 (now called SSDR3). Note that this data release in the ESO Science Archive facility by definition includes all of SSDR1,2 and 3
The Release Descriptions for these data releases are linked below

The images are standard FITS images. The 1D spectra are in binary table format, click here for info on how to read and display.  The SPTABLE IRAF external package is able to read, display, and analyse (via the onedspec and rv packages) the ESO one-dimensional science spectra.

Download EFOSC2 & SOFI Spectral Data

  • Navigate to the ESO spectral query form  - 'PESSTO' should be preselected in the Collections dropdown (see figure below).

  • Set the Return max to 10000 rows (the default is 200).
  • You will get 3077 files records returned. There are 3077 individual spectra. But there are 6154  files, since we have both 1D spectra and the 2D (flux and wavelength calibrated) spectral images also available.
  • Select 'MarkAll' and then click 'Request marked datasets'.

  • Download these files in the usual way with your ESO archive login (i.e. ESO User Portal)
  • You will also have a README file, which is called something like README_187230.txt  (the number will vary).

  • The files you get are not named the same as in the data release description and are called something like ADP.2014-01-20T10:01:53.357.fits where ADP stands for Advanced Data Products (we think!) and the date is when the file was released. This is not particularly useful as the filenames submitted had informative names like SN2012ec_20121020_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56456_1_sb.fits as explained in the Release Description.

Download SOFI Imaging Data

For the SOFI imaging products - go the the main ESO Imaging Query form and follow the same procedure as for the spectral data above.
  • In total there should be 1550 SOFI Imaging files to download - 775 images and 775 weight files.
  • For the SOFI image files, again they will be called something like ADP.2014-09-16T11:49:48.107.fits. Which is not very useful. The original filenames are in the image header, and here is another renaming script to rename these back to those.
  • The images attributes and data reduction process is described in the A&A paper

Download Catalogues

To download the transient catalogue and the multi-epoch photometry catalogue, navigate to the ESO Catalogue Facility, login and either search for 'PESSTO':

or simply select the catalogues from the list displayed on the page:
