A Resource for Educator Preparation Programs in Washington State

The Program Support department of the Professional Educator Standards Board works with and provides guidance and support for educator preparation programs across Washington. Currently in the state there are 23 approved programs educating and training the future teachers, principals, program administrators, superintendents, school counselors and school psychologists. In addition to these traditional routes, PESB oversees the Career and Technical Education Business & Industry (CTE B&I) route to educator preparation where career changers can earn a teaching certificate. Program Support establishes criteria for preparation in school-based practice criteria for school social workers, OTs, PTs, SLPs, and school nurses.  We provide the same guidance and support for these programs.

What Program Support does:

  • Program review and approval -- manage institution site reviews and approval based on established and Board approved standards.

  • Standards approval, reapproval and annual review -- preparation programs must demonstrate compliance with five standards (1 - PEAB, 2 - Assessment, 3 - Governance & Resources, 4 - Program Design, 5 - Knowledge & Skills)

  • Endorsement competencies -- develop and maintain the necessary competencies an education candidate needs to show proficiency in before becoming certified.

  • Certification requirements -- implement Board approved certification requirements at the policy level. The OSPI certification office handles day-to-day certification processing.

  • Partnerships -- support programs in increasing capacity of partnerships, build mutually-beneficial collaboration, and ensure responsiveness to the needs of P-12 schools and districts.

  • Accountability -- provide regular reports to the Board and the public on the status of educator preparation programs

  • Regulatory -- implement Board approved Washington Administrative Code (WAC) rules and guidelines.

  • Respond to needs -- prepare options and policy solutions in response to analysis of needs of Washington schools, legislative and Board priorities, and national trends and data.
  • Technical Assistance -- provides and brokers technical assistance (TA) for approved programs, and for professional organizations
