About Mr. Rusek

Mr. Rusek is currently in his twelfth year of teaching and eleventh in the Peotone Schools. He directs the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and the Marching Blue Devils at Peotone High School and also teaches the 4th and 5th grade bands at Peotone Intermediate Center. In addition to these ensembles, he also teaches the Freshman Seminar and History of American Music classes at the High School, conducts the pit orchestra in the musical, and has taught Music Theory and Composition at PHS. He has also served as the co-sponsor of the Peotone High School chapter of the GSA and Tri-M Music Honor Society. In the past, he also taught 8th grade general music at PJHS. Prior to teaching in Peotone, Mr. Rusek taught in the Yorkville Community School District.

Mr. Rusek grew up in Orland Park, a southwest suburb of Chicago, and attended Carl Sandburg High School. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he was a member of many different ensembles, including the Symphonic Bands, Marching Illini, and Brass Band. Mr. Rusek’s primary instruments are from the percussion family and has performed with numerous organizations and groups. Additional degrees include a Master of Arts, Education Leadership (Type 75) from Olivet Nazarene University. He is a member of IPA, MENC, ILMEA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and PAS.

When not at school, Mr. Rusek enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, reading, and putzing around the house and yard. He performs his instrument as much as he can and also helps teach many students privately and in group instruction in the Southwest Suburban Area, including active service as a judge and clinician for local and state contests.
