 CHS GUIDANCE NEWS

Welcome back to school! It’s that time of year and Ms. Kyte and Dr. Boyle are already actively working with the students. Ms. Kyte will be meeting with the senior class regarding their progression towards their college and career options, addressing financial aid deadlines, and individually meeting with each senior regarding their individual goals. Dr. Boyle will be individually meeting with each freshman and making a personal introduction. Ms. Kyte and Dr. Boyle’s next step will be to conduct group sessions in September with the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes in an effort to begin test preparation for the coming PSAT and PSAT/NMSQT scheduled for October.

We have welcomed many new students to the Catholic High Community in the first few weeks of school, with an orientation for new students on August 8 and for parents on August 21. We look forward to their contribution to our school, and we wish all of our students a very successful 2018-2019 school year.

Remember to regularly check out the Catholic High School calendar, located on the school website (www.pensacolachs.org) to stay abreast of the multiple workshops and seminars that are offered throughout the year.

CHS STANDARDIZED TESTS FOR 2018-2019

Standardized testing is already in full swing as the students are introduced to MAP. MAP stands for “Measure of Academic Progress” and is a standardized achievement test that will be given in both the English and Math classes at the beginning and end of the school year.

Then on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be given the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT). Freshmen and sophomores will take the PSAT and the juniors will be administered the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) /Preliminary SAT (PSAT).

New Requirements

Catholic High School’s Code for both tests is 101365.  This code is now a requirement in order for a student to register for the ACT and SAT. Students will also be prompted to provide a photo during registration. This information will be included on tickets, test center rosters, and score reports that are sent to students’ high schools.

Students are encouraged to register for the ACT (www.act.org) and SAT  (www.collegeboard.com) online (students should verify all test dates and deadlines with ACT and / or SAT).

Dates, times, and locations of the ACT and SAT will be given in bimonthly newsletters and posted in the Guidance Department Office.

 2018 COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR

Once again, CHS will host our own COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 from 8-10 a.m. in the CHS Cafeteria. Over seventy colleges have been invited to attend. This fair is held to ensure students and parents easy access to abundant, accurate information on college admissions directly from their representatives. CHS juniors and seniors will be spending time gathering information that morning. CHS parents are invited and encouraged to attend a College Fair.

Pensacola State College (PSC) will also be hosting a countywide College Night on Monday, September 10, 2018 at the Lou A. Ross Health and Sports Center/Hartsell Arena (Gym) Bldg. 3 on the Pensacola Campus from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (details available at 484-1554 & http://www.pensacolastate.edu/community/college-fair/.)

Representatives from scores of colleges throughout the country will be available with information for parents and students.

REMINDER:

POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTION ADMISSION STANDARDS

It is important to recognize and confirm with each institution of interest (no matter which state the school may be located) the academic, standardized test score, essay, etc. requirements the institution has established for admissions consideration. Each postsecondary educational institution has the opportunity to set their individual minimum admission standards.
