September Theme – September’s “T.A.K.E.S. P.R.I.D.E.” theme is “trustworthiness.”

 

Quote of the Day – This week’s quote is from Booker T. Washington.  Booker T. Washington said, “Few things can help an individual more than to place responsibility on him, and to let him know that you trust him.”  Booker T. Washington believed that the best way for African-Americans to gain social rights was to be people that could be trusted.

 

Eclipse Glasses – Do you have used eclipse glasses?  Don’t let them go to waste.  Let other people around the world that are not as fortunate as you have the same experience that you had.  On behalf of Astronomers Without Borders, Mrs. Purscell, along with Student Council, are collecting eclipse glasses to ship around the world.  There will be collection boxes outside the office, outside Mrs. Purscell’s room, and one in the 6th grade hallway.  Collections will conclude at the end of the month.

 

Music News -

  • Band NewsJazz Band auditions will take place this week.  Any student interested in trying out for jazz band (grades 6/7/8) should report to the band room at the beginning of CP1 to select an audition time.  We especially need to hear from the 6th grade band members!  6th graders are an important part of the Jazz Band here at South.
  • Choir News – Choir rehearsals this week are as follows:
    • Tuesday – Chorale auditions
    • Wednesday – Chorale auditions
    • Thursday – Chorale auditions
  • Orchestra News
    •  All 6/7/8 orchestra members are asked to return their orchestra permission slips asap to Mrs. Young so schedules can be made.

 

Drama Club News – Attention students and faculty:  The time has come to think about this year’s musical, but you’ll have to do some work to figure out the title of the show.

  • Listen closely to clue #2:  You’re in LUCK!  Miss Krall and Mrs. Mylin will be back to direct this year.

 

Yearbook News – Attention students interested in purchasing a yearbook this year:  Josten’s is running a special!  Order your yearbook online by September 29th with personalization and get 4 free icons!  Watch out for flyers coming your way in homeroom this week.  Oh, and we almost forgot, yearbooks will be in FULL COLOR this year!  That’s right, our first color yearbook!  Yearbooks have been selling out for the past few years, so don’t miss out - order your yearbook today.

 

Visiting Author News – Author Rob Buyea will be visiting South MS on October 12th to make a presentation to the students in 6th grade.  Mr. Buyea is mostly known for his Mr. Terupt books; Because of Mr. Terupt is the first in this series.  If you are interested in purchasing one of Rob Buyea’s books, you can do so through the pre-sale at South.  Order forms will be distributed in your homeroom.  Mrs. Brennan also has extra copies in the library.  All pre-orders and payments must be received by next Wednesday, September 20th.

 

From Mrs. Russo – Mrs. Russo is offering a grief support group for students who are coping with the death of a family member, friend, or other important person.  Information and sign-up forms are available in the guidance office.  Sign up forms should be returned to Mrs. Russo.

 

Boxtop$ for Education – Save those Boxtop$!  A new Boxtop$ challenge is on and will run until Friday, October 20th.  Submit all Boxtop$ to your homeroom.  The homeroom with the most Boxtop$ collected will win a prize!  All funds earned will help support our school.  Good luck to all of the homerooms!

 

REMINDER

  • Attn. Parents/Guardians:  When dropping off/picking up students/forgotten items, PLEASE do not park in the NO PARKING/FIRE ZONE area near the main office entrance.
    • Due to bus traffic and student safety, please park on the street between the hours of 7:00AM – 8:00AM, and 2:00PM – 3:00PM.  Otherwise, you may park in the designated parking spaces in the parking lot.  Thank you!
  • Attn. Parents/Guardians:  When calling in your child’s absence, please remember to call the voice mail line at 215-257-0469 (press 4 or ext. 1008).  Thank you!
  • Attn Students:  ALL students should be entering the building in the morning through the doors near the cafeteria. DO NOT enter through the front doors near the bike rack.
  • Please remind your parents they are not to enter the front lot where the buses drop off between 7:00-8:15AM.  If your parent or guardian is dropping you off between these times, they should let you out at the 5th Street curb.
  • Also, no students should be entering through the front doors before 7:45AM.
  • All Students and staff are reminded - DO NOT open building doors for anyone.  All guests should be directed to enter thru the secure vestibule at the front of the building.
