PSD Adult Evening School Offers Financial Planning Classes

The Pennridge Adult Evening School is offering a variety of courses this spring aimed at providing information to help you make sound financial decisions about paying for college, investing, and retirement.

Starting on Monday, March 4, Cheryl Flynn, a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in Doylestown, will offer a series of three courses: Investing Basics, Developing a College Funding Strategy, and Social Security and You. You have the option of taking one, two or all three courses.

During the Investing Basics class, you will learn about the markets and investing strategies. The goal is to help you better understand the three foundational elements of investing used by nearly all investors and a goals-based wealth management approach based on your life, not a market or index.

On March 11, Ms. Flynn will present Developing a College Funding Strategy, which is aimed at both parents and grandparents. You will learn the various options available developing an education investment strategy. The class will cover education funding options (borrowing versus saving) and tax-advantaged education planning solutions.

The series wraps up on March 18 with Social Security and You. After paying in the system for years, it’s your turn to reap the rewards of your hard work. However, there are many rules governing when and how you can receive these funds. When you decide to collect can be a function of a variety of elements, including your current health, family history of longevity, marital status and the age difference between you and your spouse. We will discuss what factors you should consider before starting your benefits, when is the most appropriate time to start taking benefits, and ways in which you can potentially maximize your benefits.

Each class is $25 and will be held in LGI 3.1 at Pennridge High School.

Retirement Planning Today is a two-night course that focuses on understanding the retirement “red zone.” Presented by James McGoldrick, vice president of the Cane Financial Group, you will learn how much money you need to retire, how to create your own goals for a successful retirement, how to improve cash flow, select retirement plan distribution options and understand risk management.

You have two options for attending the Retirement Planning Today course: Wednesdays, March 6 and March 13, or Tuesdays, March 19 and March 26. All classes are held from 6:30 pm to 9 pm in LGI 3.1 at Pennridge High School. The fee for the two-night Retirement Planning Today course is $25, plus $25 for a workbook. You may bring a guest for free.
