News for the week of May 12, 2017

We are currently looking for proctors for the upcoming EOG’s.  The dates are May 31, June 1st, June 2nd and June 5th.  If you are interested in becoming a proctor, please call Mrs. Jordan or Ms. Love here at the school.


Thursday, May 18th, there will be a Beta Club induction ceremony held in the Media Center.  The Beta Club is an organization for 4th through 12 grades. It’s purpose is to promote the ideal of academic achievement, character, leadership and service among elementary and secondary school students. Criteria that was consider were overall grades, total discipline referrals and EOG. scores. The induction ceremony starts at 5 p.m.  Following the induction, those 8th graders who are in Beta Club will be recognized as they transition to the high school.


After school tutoring is still available on Monday and Wednesday.  The last day of tutoring for this school year will be May 17, 2017.  


There will be a band concert on May 23rd at 6:00 - 7:00 pm.  Students are to be in the band room no later than 5:45 to warm-up for the performance.  Parents, if you are not able to attend please pick up your student no later than 8:00 pm.  If there are any questions please contact Mr. Judy or the front office.**


Kindergarten Enrollment Activities for the Class of 2030 are here! Our feeder school, Malpass Corner Elementary, will have a Parent Event on May 25,2017 at 5:30 p.m.  A student event will be held on May 23, 2017 or May 24,2017 from  8:30 a.m.to 11:40 a.m. (choose one).  The address of Malpass Corner Elementary is: 4992 Malpass Corner Road Burgaw.  The telephone number is: (910)283-5889.


In preparation for the EOG’s there will be weekly quizzes in 8th grade Science. All students are requested to do test corrections to improve their grades. In addition, if you have internet access, or can get to the library, students may continue to review in order to improve mastery of the content and to prepare for the EOG’s. Let’s excel and show our school pride!


Yearbook deadline has passed. However,  you can still order online at treering.com.  Ordering a yearbook now will require that you have to pay shipping.  


This week in athletics: We have baseball games on Monday May 15th vs. Topsail and Thursday May 18th vs. Penderlea both games will be played at the Burgaw ball park. Volleyball has a home game Monday May 15th against Topsail. Please come out and support your teams.


Every Friday is West Pender Attire Day. All students and staff are asked to wear a West Pender T-shirt, or hoodie.  Please place your order this week so that your child can be a part of West Pender Attire Day.

There is a 5th grade transition night scheduled at WPMS on Tuesday May 9th from 5p.m. to 7p.m.  All parents with a rising 6th grader are encouraged to come out and bring their student on campus for a tour.

The Algebra Prognosis Test will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday. Parents of those students taking the test, please provide them with proper rest and nutrition so that they can be prepared to do their best.

8th grade students will be bringing Benchmark Data Sheets home on Monday.  Please review your student’s Benchmark and growth data with them, sign the form and return it to school with your student. We are proud of the progress our students are making!

School Board Seeks Public Input on Superintendent Search

The Pender County Board of Education sought direct input from interested members of the community to help shape the search process and assist in defining the qualities and characteristics of the next superintendent of Pender County Schools (PCS).

The board invited parents and community members to participate in a short community survey that was accessible online from April 26, 2017 until May 31, 2017.

Results of this survey are to be compiled and presented by the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) at the regular board meeting on June 13, 2017.

In addition, all employees of PCS will have an opportunity to complete a separate staff survey. Access to and details about completing the employee version of the search survey will be communicated via school system email or may be obtained from the central office.

Citizens may also sign up to address the board during the public comment period upcoming regular board meetings. Speakers must otherwise comply with board policy on public comment.

In addition to input received from the surveys and public comment, written statements from any local groups or organizations may be submitted to Allison Schafer via mail at NCSBA, P.O. Box 97877, Raleigh, NC 27624, via email at aschafer@ncsba.org, or via fax at 919-841-4020. These statements should be received no later than June 5, 2017

Report cards will go home  this Friday April 7, 2017.  Please review your student's report card.  If there needs to be a conference held with their teacher, please notify the teacher to schedule a time to meet.


There will be a PTO meeting Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Media Center. Please come out and support.


Spring Break for Pender County Schools will be next week April 10th thru 14th. There will be no school for Students and Staff.  Have a safe, restful break and return on April 17th prepared to finish this school year strong.

Congratulations to WPMS students Amari Walker and Estrella Naumuk-Segovia and Carolina Garcia-Ramirez who represented Pender County at the North Carolina State Science Fair at Meredith College in Raleigh this weekend. Special congratulations to Amari’ who placed third in the Junior Biological B Division in the state.  We are very proud of all of our budding scientists!

Athletics: Baseball tryouts will be Monday 27th from 3:30-5:00 at the Burgaw Dixie Youth Field, transportation will be provided to the field and parents are responsible for picking up their students at the Burgaw Park.  The team will be announced on Tuesday the 28th.
