Driver Education

The Pender County School system offers driver education at a cost of $65.00 for students who live in
Pender County and are enrolled in Pender County Schools, private, or home school and are less than 18 years old.

Students must successfully complete 30 hours of classroom work, along with 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
Students must be 14 1/2 years old before enrolling in class and must be present for the entire class time.

Students must sign up for drivers' education at their respective middle or high school to be registered for classes.
Each school sets their own class dates. After the classroom portion is done, instructors soon begin the behind-the-wheel training.
Students are normally driven starting with the oldest driving first and the younger students following.

Classes are offered after regular school hours, during summer breaks, and other times when school is not in session.

 Learner's Permit and License
Once students have completed the driver education course, they will be issued a driver eligibility certificate from the school.
At the age of 15, students may apply for the learner's permit. The learner's permit will be held 1 year before the student can apply
for the graduated license. To learn more about the learner's permit and the graduated license program, click on this
