National Junior Honor Society Criteria for Membership

2015-2016

Mission Statement: The National Junior Honor Society is an organization that devotes itself to integrity, community involvement and improvement, and academic excellence.  Its members will demonstrate these traits, as well as a desire to excel in all endeavors.  The society will help its members grow, and the members will allow this organization to be recognized for its outstanding achievements.

The board strongly encourages programs and activities that recognize and reward excellence in student academic achievement, character and leadership.

National Junior Honor Society and BETA Clubs

In order to establish consistent eligibility standards and selection processes among middle and high schools, National Junior Honor Society and National Honor Society will consider students meeting the following criteria at the end of seventh and eleventh grades.  BETA Club will consider students meeting the following criteria at the end of sixth and/or seventh grade.

  • 93 average of final course grades in middle school and a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.9 in high school
  • No legal infractions or discipline incidents resulting in multiple ISS or single OSS
  • Members should miss no more then 9 days of school for any reason during their seventh grade year.  Any member showing more then nine days absence will be considered for induction with the understanding that for every day absent over nine days, 5 hours of additional community service will be completed before the end of the 8th grade year.  As an example if you missed 14 days as a 7th grader then you will have to perform 25 hours of additional community service during the year.

Eligible middle school students will be identified andinducted in the fall.  Eligible high school students will be identified and inducted in the Spring   If a student falls below the standards for membership, the student will be on probation for a nine week period.    If a student fails to meet the standards for two consecutive nine week periods, the student will be dismissed.  In addition to the standards for selection, students must complete six documented service hours each year to maintain membership. In addition to the standards for selection, students must complete fifteen documented service hours each year to maintain membership.

 

Applicants must submit a short, typed response to the prompt below. Responses may be delivered to Mr. Loher in room 807 or emailed as an attachment in Rich Text Format (RTF) to Clarence_loher@pender.k12.nc.us. All applications must be submitted to Mr. Loher for consideration not later than 3pm on Friday, September 18th, 2015.

The committee will be responsible for determining grade qualifications, confirming attendance, and checking behavior with administration.

Students whose parents filled out the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act form will be omitted from all published lists.
