Driver Education

posted Feb 8, 2018, 6:12 AM by Mary Tobin

When your child turns 14 1/2 they are eligible to take Drivers Education classes through Topsail High School. To be eligible for an upcoming class, you must pre-register your child through the THS Drivers Education Website. You may pre-register 1 month prior to your child turning 14 1/2. Pre-registration does not guarantee you a spot in the next class, however, it will mean you are added to the mailing list to receive updates about registration for upcoming classes. The registration link is sent out to parent emails in our system. To register for a class your child must be 14 1/2 on the first day of class, provide a copy of their birth certificate, pay a fee of $65.00 (cash), and attend a mandatory parent meeting. Please check the THS Drivers Ed website (located under the student tab) for more information.

Flu

Dear Parents, Guardians:

To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that you keep your child home from school if they are experiencing flu symptoms.  Seek medical attention as necessary and report any flu symptoms or a flu diagnosis to your child's School Nurse.

A child who has a fever greater than 100.4 degrees should remain at home until they are “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours without having fever-reducing medicine. We recommend that your child stay home from school if they have any of the following symptoms:

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Chills

  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches

  • Wet or croupy cough

  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth

  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing using a paper tissue, throw it

    away and then wash hands

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

If your child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin), it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether to bring them to school. Keeping a sick child at home will help minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.

The Pender County Health Department recommends adults and children get vaccinated against the flu annually. The flu shot is one of the best ways to prevent illness from the seasonal influenza virus. For more information about flu prevention, please call the Health Department at 910-259-1230 or visit www.cdc.gov/flu.

Weather Make-up Days

posted Jan 10, 2018, 10:35 AM by Mary Tobin

Good afternoon Pender County Families,

We’ve received many questions regarding the make-up schedule for canceled school days due to the inclement weather and icy roadways.

Pender County Schools had some time built into the calendar in case of inclement weather. After exhausting this time, the district must make up instructional time lost in order to meet state-mandated requirements for instruction.

The student make-up schedule is as follows:

- All schools will be in session for a full day on Saturday, Jan. 20

- Traditional Calendar Schools and Penderlea School will be in session for students on Monday, Jan. 22 (currently on the calendar as a Mandatory Workday)

- Pender Early College will be in session for students on Tuesday, Jan. 16 (currently on the calendar as a Mandatory Workday)

All decisions about school cancellations, delays, and early releases are made with student safety as the primary consideration. We appreciate your support and understanding.
