Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Students, and Staff,

My mission as Principal of Topsail Middle School is to facilitate and encourage daily learning for all students and staff to reach their highest potential, in an environment that is emotionally and physically safe, inviting, and fulfilling.

I am a native of Northern New Mexico and received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of New Mexico in 1981. I began my teaching career in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where I also received my Master's Degree in Computers in Education through an outreach program from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. I received further training and my Principal's License at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs in 1995.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach first, third, and fourth grades during my teaching years. I left the classroom to begin my administrative career as Dean of Students at Widefield High School in Colorado Springs in 1995. I then completed 2 years as the Assistant Principal at Mesa Ridge High School in Colorado Springs before taking over as Principal for the next 3 years. I transferred to French Elementary School as Principal and continued in that role until I moved to Wilmington in 2005. I have since worked as Assistant Principal of Cape Fear Middle School and Assistant Principal of South Topsail Elementary before becoming Principal in October 2008. I accepted the position of Principal at Topsail Middle School in August of 2015.

My family and I have really enjoyed the warm southern welcome we received when we moved here. Living on the coast has been a wonderful experience for us! My youngest daughter attends school at Topsail High School, and my oldest daughter completed her Master's Degree in Geology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and is now living and working in San Francisco. She graduated in 2012 from Duke University, where she studied Earth and Ocean Sciences. Moving to North Carolina was one of the best things we did as a family.

I have come to appreciate Hampstead and the Topsail Schools from the perspective of an administrator as well as from the perspective of a parent. Creating a great partnership between home and school is crucial to the success of each of our children.

Consider joining PTO, and please come to our many family events throughout the course of the year! My email address is annamaria_romero-lehrer@pender.k12.nc.us, and email is the best method of reaching me.

I have an open-door policy for parents, staff, and students. Please do not hesitate to call or come by if you would like to chat. However, keep in mind that the first hour or so in the morning has been set aside for me to have my daily walk-throughs of the classrooms and the school.

I look forward to continuing to work with the Topsail Middle School Community! Go, Pirates!

AnnaMaria Romero-Lehrer
