Pender County Schools to host community meeting at Penderlea

posted Jan 19, 2018, 5:33 AM by Miranda Ferguson   [ updated Jan 19, 2018, 5:33 AM ]

Pender County Schools will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, in the auditorium at Penderlea School to discuss options for the completion of the Penderlea School project.

The historic auditorium and gymnasium of Penderlea School will remain on the site following the demolition of the classroom wings and cafeteria. During the community meeting, the Board will discuss and hear community input on the future of the media center.

“If we remove the media center and build a monument that pays homage to the historic Penderlea School, we will be able to provide better athletic facilities for the community including a full-size baseball field and football/soccer field,” said Superintendent Dr. Steven Hill. “Unfortunately we will not be able to do this if the media center remains on the site due to limited space and the cost of rebuilding portions of the building, which will be necessary following the demolition of the classroom wings. We want to make this decision with the best interest of the students and community in mind, and to do that we would like to hear what’s important to them.”

Members of both the Board of Education and Board of County Commissioners will be present at the community meeting.

Updated 6/5/2017

The Pender County Board of Education sought direct input from interested members of the community to help shape the search process and assist in defining the qualities and characteristics of the next superintendent of Pender County Schools (PCS).

The board invited parents and community members to participate in a short community survey that was accessible online from April 26, 2017 until May 31, 2017.

Results of this survey are to be compiled and presented by the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) at the regular board meeting on June 13, 2017.

In addition, all employees of PCS will have an opportunity to complete a separate staff survey. Access to and details about completing the employee version of the search survey will be communicated via school system email or may be obtained from the central office.

Citizens may also sign up to address the board during the public comment period upcoming regular board meetings. Speakers must otherwise comply with board policy on public comment.

In addition to input received from the surveys and public comment, written statements from any local groups or organizations may be submitted to Allison Schafer via mail at NCSBA, P.O. Box 97877, Raleigh, NC 27624, via email at aschafer@ncsba.org, or via fax at 919-841-4020. These statements should be received no later than June 5, 2017

Hello Penderlea Learning Community,

I hope that everyone has been enjoying their break. It has been very quiet around school!

I know that many of you are working on planning for the next few weeks and I wanted to send a message with some important dates for your calendar.

October 11th was originally scheduled for a SIT meeting, but we are going to reschedule this meeting for October 17th. If you are a SIT member, please note this on your calendar.

October 12th will be Rachel's Challenge day for our school. K-5 students will go to an assembly during the school day and all parents and students in grades 6-8 are invited to attend a Parent Reaction Night session at 5:30 in the Penderlea Auditorium. Rachel's Challenge is a program that addresses bullying and safe schools. It is an excellent program to attend. Please note that younger children are asked not to attend the evening session due to some of the content discussed.

October 21st will be the Penderlea Fall Festival from 5-8. Please mark your calendars and expect some more fun information to follow from PTO about this event.

I hope that everyone enjoys the rest of their week and please call the office if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Sincerely,

Carrie L. Armstrong

Principal, Penderlea K-8 School
