Topsail Area Schools Reassignment

Recommendation Rationale

  • Clean Feeder Pattern

    • In the recommended reassignment, South Topsail Elementary School and Topsail Elementary School feed into Topsail Middle School. North Topsail Elementary School and Surf City Elementary School feed into Surf City Middle School.

  • School Attendance Zones Keep Neighborhoods Together

    • Communities and neighborhoods share the same school assignment throughout the elementary, middle and high school levels.

  • Relieve Overcrowding

    • Elementary and middle schools in the Topsail area will open under capacity for the 2018-19 school year based on current area demographics.

  • K-3 Class Size Mandate

    • Recent legislation requires reduced class sizes in grades K-3, which, in turn, means more classroom spaces needed for these grades.

  • Thinking Toward the Future

    • Based on current population growth and trends, the recommended reassignment plan should remain viable through at least the 2020-21 school year.
