Penderlea School to open Oct. 8, 2018

PENDERLEA -- The new Penderlea School is slated to open for students Oct. 8, 2018.

Pender County Schools Superintendent Dr. Steven Hill said there were two options for the opening of the Penderlea School project, including an opening at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year and opening after fall break.

“After some unanticipated construction delays and change in contractor leadership, we have decided to open the school on Oct. 8 and make sure it is completed correctly,” Dr. Hill said. “The existing Penderlea School has been around for 100 years, and we want to ensure the new Penderlea School continues to serve the community for another 100 years.”

The existing Penderlea School classroom buildings will be demolished and graded to create athletic fields for students. The gym and auditorium will remain on the site. Pender County Schools is working with the local Ruritan Club to preserve and honor the historic school.

In 2014, Pender County passed a $75 million school bond to complete additions and renovations at Burgaw Middle, Cape Fear Elementary, Came Fear Middle, and West Pender Middle, as well as a new Penderlea School and a new elementary and middle school in Surf City.
