The Pender County Board of Education sought direct input from interested members of the community to help shape the search process and assist in defining the qualities and characteristics of the next superintendent of Pender County Schools (PCS).

The board invited parents and community members to participate in a short community survey that was accessible online from April 26, 2017 until May 31, 2017.

Results of this survey are to be compiled and presented by the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) at the regular board meeting on June 13, 2017.

In addition, all employees of PCS will have an opportunity to complete a separate staff survey. Access to and details about completing the employee version of the search survey will be communicated via school system email or may be obtained from the central office.

Citizens may also sign up to address the board during the public comment period upcoming regular board meetings. Speakers must otherwise comply with board policy on public comment.

In addition to input received from the surveys and public comment, written statements from any local groups or organizations may be submitted to Allison Schafer via mail at NCSBA, P.O. Box 97877, Raleigh, NC 27624, via email at aschafer@ncsba.org, or via fax at 919-841-4020. These statements should be received no later than June 5, 2017.

BMS

Hello Red Devil Families!

We hope you have all had a fantastic weekend! This week is a very important week at Burgaw Middle School as we administer our final benchmark assessments and collect data to ensure students are prepared for our End of Grade assessments and NC Final Exams. These benchmark assessments will cover core content areas including Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Our assessments are aligned with the NC standards and will provide us with valuable data to ensure your child receives appropriate intervention and enrichment prior to end of year assessments. As a way to motivate our students we are challenging all students to show growth in all areas. Those who show 10% growth in 2 or more academic areas are in for a real treat. Kona Ice will be visiting BMS on May 4th and students will be treated to a special reward for their growth and achievement. The challenge is realistic and we know each of our students has the potential to surpass this goal with their hard work over the past several months. Please help us remind them of this special challenge and ensure they are prepared for our testing this week. Math Benchmarks will begin on Monday followed by Reading benchmarks on Tuesday, Science on Wednesday, and Social Studies on Thursday. All make up testing will take place on Friday. Student attendance is very important as we collect this data and help our students practice for upcoming end of year assessments.

On Friday, April 28th, many of our students will participate in the Special Olympics held at Heide Trask High School. We look forward to cheering them and wish them the best of luck on Friday!

Information has been sent home regarding the upcoming 8th grade formal and they also have a very special field trip approaching to UNCW. We are excited to offer this opportunity for our students to visit an institute of higher learning and participate in academic activities sponsored by Marine Quest. Please be sure permission slips have been returned to your child's homeroom teacher as soon as possible. The 8th grade formal will take place at Burgaw Middle School on May 12th from 6-8pm. Students who have met academic and behavioral expectations are looking forward to a very special evening and we are excited to host and provide them with such an exciting opportunity. There is no specific dress code for formal; however, students must meet PCS dress code requirements and are not allowed to wear jeans. We look forward to seeing them all dressed up for their dinner/dance. Food will be provided along with music and dancing.

We continue to appreciate the support of all of our stakeholders including parents, community members, partners, etc. We had a very successful curriculum night last week and our 3rd 9 weeks awards ceremony. If you missed these activities, please stay tuned for the next opportunity to join us and find out all about the great things happening at Burgaw Middle School.

We hope everyone has a terrific week! And as always, GO RED DEVILS!

Good evening, Red Devil Families!

We hope everyone is staying warm as our temperatures have taken a dip in this early spring.  Many have probably seen some snow flakes in the past 24 hours ... we hope everyone got to enjoy!  School will be on a regular schedule tomorrow.  No delays are scheduled.

We continue to focus on student growth and proficiency at Burgaw Middle.  Our students and staff are working hard practicing skills and strategies which will enhance their knowledge and prepare them for EOG assessments.

I would like to congratulate our Boys and Girls Basketball teams on excellent seasons this year.  Our boys and girls team did an excellent job in the semi-final and final rounds of the basketball championship and we are so very proud of their efforts.

We would also like to congratulate our Battle of the Books team.  They scored over 100 points in their competition on Fridayand made us all very proud!  Students who participated read over 2 dozen books in preparation and did an excellent job recalling key information for their challenge on Friday.

Our Sea Perch team will be recognized on Tuesday night at the BOE meeting.  They earned national recognition and will compete in May in Atlanta as they continue their quest.  We are so excited for them and wish them the best of luck at the next level.

Last weekend our Science Olympiad team competed at UNCW in the regional competition.  Our students saw success in this competition as well.  Two of our students, Joseph and Julian, medaled in Wind Power.  All of our students represented BMS well and we appreciate their hard work and efforts.  I would like to thank Mrs. Amy Lawson, Ms. Maggie McKinley, Mrs. Malia Newton, and Mrs. Stacie Brown for their facilitation of this team.  Mrs. Polinkski, parent volunteer, was also very instrumental and we appreciate her support.

Way to go RED DEVILS!!!

Good Evening Red Devil Families!

We hope you have all had a nice, long weekend!  Today we mark the birth and influence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We focus on the importance of his leadership and his dreams which have influenced our entire population. Today we are encouraged and filled with promise based on his hard work and perseverance.

This week promises to be another week filled with instruction and preparation for all students.  As we focus on mastery of the standards we continue to provide rigorous instruction required to help our students reach and maintain proficiency.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) testing will take place this week.  Students who have been enrolled 1st semester in Mr. Davis' CTE class will be tested on the standards taught.  Testing will take place on Tuesday with makeup testing on Wednesday.  Students will be tested following their regular elective schedule.  We wish our CTE students the best of luck and ask them to remain focused and do their very best.

On Tuesday, January 17th, Pender Early College will visit the 8th graders at Burgaw Middle School.  The administration and student representatives will share a presentation on the offerings at PEC and information on how to apply for admission.  Pender Early College will visit at 10:45am on Tuesday morning.  Mrs. Carla Padgett, our school counselor, works closely with the administration and staff to ensure students receive necessary information and enrollment packets.  If you have questions about PEC, please feel free to contact Mrs. Padgett for further information.

Basketball practices will continue this week.  Girls will practice first from 3:30-5:00 followed by the boys from 5:00-6:30pm.  Next week the boys and girls practice times will flip flop.  All students who tried out last week should plan to attend practices beginning on Tuesday.  A final team list will be posted on Wednesday.  Everyone who has expressed interest in tryouts should continue to participate in these practices.  Again, girls will practice this week from 3:30-5:00 and boys from 5:00-6:30pm in our school gym.  Our first home game is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 30th against Penderlea beginning at 4:00pm.

Our next Parent Advisory Council meeting will take place on Thursday, January 19th beginning at 5:30pm.  Any parent is welcome.  Parent Advisory Council members and the administration will meet beginning at 5:30pm in our school media center on Thursday evening.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many parents, families, and community members who attended our curriculum night and winter band concert last week.  We had a phenomenal turnout and are so excited about the opportunity we had to share our student progress with you.  We hope each of you gained insight into our math curriculum and hopefully some materials which you can use at home to help your child.  All of our bands did a magnificent job!  I was so impressed with their skills and progress throughout the year.  We look forward to another curriculum night in early Spring and our spring band concert.  The progress our students are making is terrific and we look forward to further presentations which show off their hard work and achievement!

Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 17th, is an A day.  We look forward to seeing all of our students bright and early in the morning.

Hope you all have a wonderful evening and as always, GO RED DEVILS!!!

Happy New Year to our Burgaw Middle School students and families!  We hope you have all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday season. We have missed our students and look forward to their return tomorrow, Monday, January 2nd.  School will resume a regular schedule tomorrow and we are excited to get back to work.  We still have a lot to accomplish over the next 5 months and we must remain committed and focused on grade level standards and mastery of objectives.  Our students will need to continue to work hard and do their best on daily assignments, homework, and classroom assessments.  Every assignment is important and meaningful in helping them show growth and master their grade level curriculum requirements.

Please remember ... our 1st class begins each day at 7:45am.  Students need to be on time and in their seats ready to learn.  We want to start off our new year by ensuring students are in the appropriate places on time to avoid disruption to the classroom environment.  Our instructional time is protected and we need students in their classes on time to avoid these interruptions to the learning environment.  Please help us by ensuring arrive at school by 7:40am and are not checked out after 2:30pm.  Every instructional minute is crucial!

This week is our re-scheduled soccer semi-finals and championship games.  While the weather forecast seems a bit gloomy, we still have the following scheduled games this week.  Girls Semi-Final game will be played at THS at 4:00pm on Tuesday, January 3rd.  The Boy's semi-final game is scheduled for Wednesday, January 4th at 4:00 at THS.  The championship game with the winners of the semi-finals will be played Thursday, January 5th at THS.  Games will begin at 4:00pm.  Our athletic director will keep you informed if weather impedes these plans for the soccer tournament.  There will be practice on Monday for both girls and boys teams.

We do have basketball tryouts scheduled to begin next week.  Coach Jones, our athletic director, will have further information available this week and share with our families.  Please remember, students must have a current physical on file in order to tryout and must meet academic, attendance, and behavior requirements in order to participate.  Our athletic director and coaching staff will be checking eligibility to determine whether students meet the criteria to represent o BMS.  Again, further information will be shared this week on specific dates and times for tryouts.

Our staff continues to participate in professional development which is designed to improve classroom instruction and meet your child's academic needs.  Please feel free to contact our staff with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child.  We desire a strong relationship with our student families and want to work with you to best support your student.

Please mark your calendars for our Math Madness Curriculum Night followed by our Band Concert on January 12th.  We are looking forward to a terrific turnout as students show off their academic skills and demonstrate their math knowledge followed by a concert which is sure to please all.  Math Madness will be followed by a Taco Dinner beginning at 5:15pm.  Our band concert will follow curriculum night.  Again, we want our families to come out, enjoy some good food, and enjoy our student performances.  Door prizes will be awarded and students will be recognized for parent/guardian participation.  It's going to be an awesome evening at Burgaw Middle School.

Again, we hope your holidays were merry and bright.  We look forward to seeing our students tomorrow morning!  Thank you all for your continued support!

Have a wonderful evening and as always, GO RED DEVILS!!!
