Happy April!
Can you believe we are already 2/3 of the way through the year?We have been so busy learning in first grade, time
has just flown by!  We have an exciting couple of months ahead of us, so please
be sure you are checking our classroom site, the PES homepage, and reading your monthly newsletters.

In reading, we are working with nonfiction texts and identifying main idea and details.
Writing time we are focusing on informational writing.  Students also need practice on starting
sentences with capitals and ending with punctuation.  Please remind them at home :)
During word work, we are learning how to tap CVC words and digraphs: wh, ch, sh, th, ck.
We have also been learning to read words with r-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur).
In math, we are learning about place value and greater than/less than  Remember to review math facts!
In science, we are learning about the Earth, Sun, and Moon.

As it gets colder out, please be sure to dress your child in appropriate outerwear.
Children still go out to recess, even when it’s cold, so heavier coats, hats, and gloves are necessary for those
cold days outside!  Your child CAN bring snowsuits to school. They must be able to dress themselves into their snow gear
independently and in a timely manner.  Students must have gloves, boots, hats, snow pants, and jackets
to play in the snow. There are some days that the snow is not an option because of playground
conditions (teachers do not know this ahead of time).
*Please be sure to send in a change of shoes if you send your child in wearing snow boots.

Be sure to check out our class site often!  This is where you will find updates on the
skills we are working on in class, as well as some tips and fun things to do at home
to help you practice our new skills.  I look forward to a great year!
