Welcome

Happy December!
Can you believe we are already 1/3 of the way through first grade!?!?  Time flies when you're having fun!
You should be so, so proud of your learner.  They have all been working so hard this year!
I always like to remind my friends in class that we learn by doing hard things, and then
those hard things become not-so-hard things!

Here's a reivew of what we are doing in academics:
In our word work, we've learned all of our digraphs wh, ch, sh, th, and wh,
ahd have learned the glued sounds -all, -am, -an.  Glued sounds stick together and
change the sound of a vowel.  We are also continuing to learn more Trick Words!
Please check out those packets I send home at the start of every unit to know what new skills.
We are also still working on forming uppercase and  lowercase letters correctly.
We always start writing from the top down, so if you notice a letter/number coming from the bottom,
remind your learner that we start at the top (they should know what that means!).
In ELA, we are wrapping up or fiction mentor texts (they don't go away though!), and we are
beginning to introduce non-fiction.  I always find the children are amazed to learn new facts!
Ask your child these things when reading for extra practice.  I bet they will surprise you!
In math, we are working on geometry.  We will learn about 2-d and 3-d shapes, and we
will be composing and decomposing shapes.  Point out shapes while you are out and about!
Also, we are switching to subtraction 0-10 fluency.  Still review addition, but introduce those new facts!
In social studies this month, we are holidays and traditions around the world.  You may see some fun projects
coming home and learn about some new holidays/traditions celebrated!
