Guest Speaker: Sunday, September 30th
Katie Powell will be guest speaker on Sunday, September 30 during worship. She is the Statewide Organizer at the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition (JRLC) — an interfaith advocacy non-profit that works to advance the common good at the Minnesota State Capitol. Katie spends most of her time working with Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities and individuals across the state. Before joining the team at JRLC, Katie worked in direct service at a food bank, overseeing programming for food insecure neighbors, and at a public benefits law firm, where she worked with people with disabilities to make sense of social safety net programs. These experiences led her to advocacy work, where she is reminded regularly of the need to create a future that provides economic stability for all Minnesotans.

The Fifth Sunday is coming.  The Finance Committee is continuing the Fifth Sunday Giving Program.  Here is the idea.  Most people figure their giving to the church on a monthly basis.  Most months have 4 Sundays.  So, the fifth Sunday is an EXTRA Sunday.  It happens 4 or 5 times a year.  We are asking you give a little extra on that extra day.  Please mark your contribution “Fifth Sunday”.  The full amount collected for “Fifth Sunday” will be paid directly on the principal of the mortgage.  Since its inception on May, 2016, we have collected $9265.00 for Fifth Sunday giving.  Thank you so much for your generous support.  We are making a difference.  The next Fifth Sunday is September 30, 2018.   All you need to do to participate is bring in a donation marked “Fifth Sunday” in the memo.  If you will not be at Worship that day, it can be brought earlier or mailed in.  The amount is totally up to you.  No amount is too small or too large.  Thank you in advance.  You are the best.  We can do this!

Thank you to everyone who donated to Good Neighbor Center's Back to School Drive!  So far we have supplied 97 St Paul area youth with the appropriate school supplies.  Many organizations which give school supplies give a bag with a generic set of supplies. We set up a class room like a store and take the youth one at a time to pick out their supplies from their school list. Doing it this way is one way we empower low income youth and help them start their academic year feeling prepared and equipped.  Having new supplies is something you and I may take for granted, but for many local youth new school supplies are a luxury they cannot afford.  Many families are returning after being gone for the summer so we are still giving out supplies and can use more! We also have had many new families starting and are needing more volunteers, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.  If you have ever thought about getting involved or are looking for a meaningful way to spend your time, please try volunteering with us! We meet MondayTuesday & Wednesday year round from 7-8:30 PM at 441 Rice Street, St Paul. Please contact Amanda Jacobson (651) 587-3451 or goodneighborcenterstpaul@gmail.com or talk to Bob Kohl.

Lydia ProjectThe United Methodist General Conference will be coming to Minneapolis in 2020. The Dakotas-Minnesota Area has a wonderful opportunity to come together to provide hospitality for this conference. The United Methodists in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota are invited to help knit or crochet 10,000 purple scarvesScarves should be hand-knitted or hand-crocheted. Since this is a Minnesota event, please use solid purple yarn, like the colors of the Minnesota Vikings or Prince. Royal purple and bright purple are great. Please avoid lavender color and do not use variegated yarn.

Please use acrylic yarn that could be washed if needed. The pattern can be the creator's choice or there are patterns available. Finished projects should be 6-7 inches wide and at least 60 inches long (think about wrapping a scarf around your own neck to stay warm in a drafty room). If you add fringe, which is optional, please be sure the scarf itself is at least 60 inches long before the fringe.  Contact person is Pam Jacobson @pjjacobson@msn.com
