Course Description:

Practicum students will develop and implement a course curriculum for an adult community ESL class.  Students teach two sessions each week at various community sites and meet weekly with other practicum students and the course supervisor to discuss issues related to curriculum development and teaching practices. This course is offered as a collaborative effort between Portland State University, public schools, and community organizations in the Portland area.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, practicum students will be able to:

  • implement and analyze a needs assessment for a group of adult ESL learners.            
  • develop a curriculum and lesson plans for an eight-week adult ESL course based on a needs assessment.
  • teach an adult ESL course.
  • assess teaching practices and learning outcomes.
