The DE&L Lab in Europe to promote forest climate adaptation

The DE&L Lab is busy promoting Portland State University this academic year!

Ph.D. student, Garry Sotnik is in Ukraine on a Fulbright scholarship. Working with colleagues at Ukrainian National Forestry University, he will be studying forested landscapes and how humans act upon and interact with the landscape and how the landscape shapes human behavior and values.  Understanding this linkage will be critical during time of large change and uncertainty, as expected under climate change.

Professor Scheller will be touring Europe to discuss research and promote climate adaptive forest management practices.  This travel is supported by a Professional Travel Grant from Portland State University.  Dr. Scheller will be presenting his framework for understanding management under change and uncertainty and will present his research on incorporating climate uncertainty into forest management actions. His itinerary includes Humboldt University in Berlin (November 28 - December 1, 2015), Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) and the University of Applied Sciences (see photo) in Dresden (December 2 - 5), Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague (December 6 - 8), and University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna (December 9-13).

This research is made possible thanks to grants from the Fulbright program and the College of Letters and Science at Portland State University.
