Monterey High School was chosen to collaborate on a Biosand Filter Project with Dr. Laura Arias Chavez of the Tennessee Tech Chemical Engineering Department. The Biosand Filter is used to filter water for bacteria and protozoa in order to allow people in countries without drinking water to have a viable source of safe and clean drinking water.  Dr. Chavez has been instrumental in setting these low cost options up in those countries.  She contacted Dr. Sharon Anderson with the PCSSTN and wanted to work with a small high school in our county on a science project to setup and test local water sources through the filter.  Dr. Anderson set the initial meeting up with Jeff Slagle and now the MHS Biology Classes will be actually testing the creek near the football field for the final 2 weeks of school.  MHS would like to thank Dr. Chavez and TTU for allowing our school to work on this awesome project.
