Some things I learned today on our STEM Biology field trip...the human liver is the size of a fist, pig kidneys are a lot bigger than our kidneys, the kidneys and lungs work together, dry ice makes water acidic, snakes cannot bite underwater, the ph of the human body is 7.4, and the ginkgo tree is a living fossil just to name a few from our biology students.

After reading the play Antigone, Mrs. Corprew's Honors English II class prepared for a mock trial.  The students chose their roles and prepared before actually performing in our town courthouse.  Clerk of Superior Court Todd Tilley welcomed us into the courthouse and shared some historical facts, one of which was that we were sitting in North Carolina's oldest courtroom still in use today!  He also explained in more detail about the main roles during court proceedings.  Following the verdict, students walked to Brew 2 Rescue to enjoy a delicious lunch to celebrate the outcome of the trial before walking back to PCHS.

Mrs. Tyson’s AP Calculus class recently took a field trip to the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese, NC.  In addition to receiving a tour of the eco-friendly facility, the students also had the opportunity to meet with one of CSI’s oceanographers.  The students were given a detailed explanation of how calculus is used in determining where the Gulf Stream is located and how the ocean energy from the currents in the Gulf Stream could be used to create renewable energy.
