Grading

Daily Participation (40%)
40% of the student’s grade each quarter will be based on participation in daily band rehearsals. Students can earn full participation points by bringing all materials, following classroom procedures, and by participating actively in the day’s activities.  Students must be ready to play by the 2nd bell in order to receive full participation points.

Music Rehearsal Rubric

Smart Music Assessments (10%)
Weekly playing assessments will be due on the last day of the week.  Assessments turned in late will be counted off 1/2 point for each day late.  These assessments will be based on music we are currently playing in class.  Assessments will range from warm-ups, scales and concert music.  At the end of each quarter, the student’s smart music grades will be averaged, and the final score will count as 10% of the student’s final grade for that quarter.

Option #1 - Lesson Preparation (25%)
Students will be expected to attend weekly band lessons as assigned. At each lesson, the student’s overall level of preparation will be evaluated. The average lesson preparation score will count for 25% of the student’s final grade for the quarter.  Lessons will be offered, before school as well as 2nd, 3rd and 4th period.  Lessons may be scheduled privately or in groups of 2 or more like instruments.

Option #2 - Before School Sectionals (25%)
Mrs. Dykstra will ask that sections come before school to rehearse.  For those who cannot come before school, choose another option such as mentor sectionals/lessons.

Missed Lessons or Sectionals

You may make up missed lessons or Sectional by staying after school on the following Monday (PASS Program) and submitting a Smart Music Assignment.  Mrs. Dykstra is also Ok if you want to make up the missed sectional or lesson by submitting the Smart Music assignment during a study hall.  You must set this up with Mrs. Dykstra in advance.  Students will have ONE week to complete the assignment.  After one week, the grade results in a Zero.

Performances (25%)
There will be several required performances throughout the school year. Students will receive a participation grade for each of these performances. At the end of each quarter, the student’s performance grades will be averaged, and the final score will count as 25% of the student’s final grade for that quarter.

Required Performances include Home Football Games, All Band Concerts, Pep Band Performances and Tulip Time Performances.
