In April 2019, Bishop McElroy of San Diego invited Fr. Hurley to coordinate the 2019 Diocesan Young Adult Synod, Christ Lives! A Time of Dreams and Decisions.  Guiding the synod process is Pope Francis' Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Christ is Alive!

Each parish will have one young adult delegate in the synod gatherings.  Beginning September 7th through October 13th there will be seven deanery gatherings throughout the diocese.  After dialogue and approval by the pastors, each delegate will bring three additional young adults to the deanery gatherings.  With 100 parishes it is expected that these gatherings will bring together approximately 400 participants.

The General Assembly for the synod will take place at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, October 26 and 27.  Over 100 young adults will be joined by Bishop, the Deans and members of the Priests Council to discern the input and recommendations from the deanery gatherings.  The delegates will discern all the input gathered and develop a plan to be implemented throughout the diocese.

Fr. Hurley is not a strange to San Diego since he coordinated the 2016 Diocesan Synod on Embracing the Joy of Love following Pope Francis' Post Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of Love, issued in March, 2016.
