Information Technology (IT) Manager (July 2000-present)

· Manage the purchase of computer equipment and services with an annual budget of $150K

· Direct and manage five IT department staff that serves more than 85 employees in two locations

· Evaluate hardware and software resources; identify deficiencies; oversee research and selection of hardware and software options; continued development of server upgrades, intranet and file sharing services

· Establish policies for use and maintenance of hardware and software systems; develop security protocols and standard operating procedures for information backup and maintenance

· Oversee training and orientation of Press staff in new technologies; approve training and procedural manuals and protocols; design and implement systems to evaluate computer competence of staff

· Responsible for project management of several Press-wide initiatives, including:

-- Global Business Systems Committee: chaired this body, designated to research, procure and implement a $600K upgrade of the Press’s primary electronic accounting, order and fulfillment database.

-- Bibliographic Database Committee: designated to assess departmental workflows to prepare for the replacement of the current editorial/marketing/production database system


Information Systems Specialist (July 1996-July 2000)

Computer Support/Training/Administrative Duties

· Primary Macintosh and PC desktop troubleshooter for 100+ workstations, installing hardware and software, providing desktop support, and software documentation and training

· Created help pages with resources and links to computing tips for end users

· In charge of budgetary estimates for and implementation of Press capital computer purchases

· Developed original website for International Mathematics Research Notices, Duke's first print/electronic journal incorporating Adobe Acrobat® and TeX

· Served on 1998 Electronic Committee of the Association of American University Presses; chaired in 2000-01.


FileMaker Pro database development

· Created the Duke Press Unified Database: Journals and Books Editorial, Marketing, Production, and Publicity FileMaker databases built into an enterprise system used to track a title from proposal or article to final publication; programmed service calls and computer and software inventory database

· Responsible for coordination, reprogramming, installation and training on the Duke database for the University of Georgia Press, which purchased the system.


Production Coordinator (September 1993 - July 1996)

· Tracked editorial and graphic production of five journals from manuscript to printed product

· Composed electronic pre-press documents; communicated with editors, authors and suppliers; maintained production financial spreadsheets


Africa News Service, Durham, NC, September 1990-August 1993 .

Production Editor

· Supervised and executed graphic production of Africa News, a biweekly newspaper; assisted in the design of promotional, editorial and fundraising materials

· Responsible for composition, coding and uploading of electronic files for Africa News Online, an electronic news service; established accounts with various online services and news bureaus

· Maintained all hardware and software; made purchase recommendations; served as Macintosh/PC network administrator and manager of electronic library and other in-house databases; lead computer trainer of personnel and provider of software documentation


Forest History Society, Durham, NC, July 1989-March 1990

· Responsible for database reorganization and office management; handled communications between editorial office and authors, board members and subscribers of The Journal of Forest and Conservation History.

· Coordinated essays and reviews for production; indexed and reorganized library collections; executed library research/photo/film requests

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Support Group (PCOSA), Durham/RTP chapter, NC. 2001-2003

  • Founder, organizer and facilitator of local chapter's monthly meetings; co-coordinator of March 2003 regional educational conference; worked closely with nationally-recognized researchers in the field of PCOS


Old West Durham Neighborhood Association (OWDNA), Durham, NC. 1998-2004

  • As Webmaster, was responsible for acquisition of free web space, development, design and maintenance of  OWDNA web site and listserv; photographed virtual tour of the neighborhood
  • Served as neighborhood watch block captain for 2600 section of Lawndale Avenue; coordinated participation of Lawndale Avenue in annual charity event for the donation of food to local homeless shelters
  • Developed web site for Friends of South Ellerbe Creek, dedicated to conserving and enhancing the recreational, scenic and historic qualities of South Ellerbe Creek and its landscape


Partners Against Crime (PAC), Durham, NC. September 1999-2003

  • Co-Chair (through October 2000), duties included hosting and moderating meetings between neighborhoods and the police serving District 2.
  • Served as web host provider, webmaster and listserv moderator; responsible for development of PAC 2 web site and listserv for the Durham community, the local police department and other municipal bodies.
