About Palmerston Primary School

Our Primary School is a contributing school for New Entrant to Year 6 students. It is 41 years old and is sited on 4 hectares. The school consists of 6 classrooms, a library, a hall and an administration block containing offices, and a sick bay. Classrooms are joined to shared resource rooms in both the senior and junior blocks. A multi-purpose activity centre was built in 2006.

There are also separate Physical Education and Resource sheds, a covered, heated swimming pool and  netball/mini ball courts outside senior classrooms and adjacent to the swimming pool on the top part of our grounds.

Our nearest neighbours include a modern Playcentre which is sited on the school grounds. Across the road to the north is East Otago High School with classes from Y7 to Y13.

Palmerston is primarily a rural junction town, the connecting point of SH1 Dunedin / Christchurch and SH85 Queenstown / Alexandra / Palmerston i.e., Central Otago. Although Palmerston is a Service Centre its more recent growth is because of its position for the workers of Macraes Gold Mine inland from the town.

Despite a reasonable turnover of families the roll is fairly stable. The roll at the start of the year will be 100 and it will grow to around 125 at the end of the year. The school is classified as U3, Decile 6 and has pupils from NE to Y6.
