Community Service

During the course of the year, Cub Scout Pack 32 participates in several community service activities and projects. Through community service our Scouts learn how their work can positively impact people in our community.


Packs 32 and 43 participate in Memorial Day Remembrance
On May 25, 2013 both Packs chartered by the American Legion Post 419 participated in Memorial Day remembrance activities by placing American Flags at the graves of US Veterans buried at the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.  Scouts searched the grounds for the graves of Veterans, placed a flag at the headstone, then saluted and thanked the Veteran for their service.  It is an excellent opportunity for the Scouts to learn about the true costs of freedom and to honor the men and women that served our country.


Pack 32 hosts site for National River Clean Up Day

On May 18, 2013 Pack 32 and Brownie Troop 60650 hosted a clean up site for National River Clean Up Day.  The sight was located diagonally across the street from the under construction Levi's Stadium.  Scouts, their families, and community members came out to remove litter along the San Thomas Aquino creek.  Participants removed over 200 lbs of trash and recyclable materials from the waterways that would have otherwise floated out to the bay.



Pack 32 and Girl Scouts Donate new flags to Washington Open Elementary
After noticing the American Flag at Washington Open Elementary was worn out and in need of being replaced, Girl Scout and Cub Scout units that regularly meet at the school teamed up to raise funds to replace both the American and California flags.  Then in a special ceremony held on April 17th a color gaurd made of Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts that attend Washington Open retired the worn flags and raised the new flags above the school.  The old flags will be disposed of at a later date in a special ceremony by Pack 32.



Pack 32 Participates in Veteran's Day Celebrations
On November 11, 2013, Cub Scouts from Pack 32 along with their families, gathered to join The American Legion Post 419 to honor America's Veterans. Members of the Pack formed up near the San Jose Arena and marched east along Santa Clara St to Plaza de Cezar Chavez at Market St in the annual San Jose Veteran's Day Parade.




Pack 32 paints benches for Washington Open Elementary
On Aug 4, 2012 Cub Scouts from Pack 32 and their families came out to Washington Open Elementary to repaint wooden benches around the play ground and stage..  The Cub Scouts, many of whom attend Washington Open were happy to be providing this community service.  School Principal Lori King was especially thankful of the wonderful job the Scouts did.  Pack 32 makes use of the School's facilities throughout the school year.  Pack 32 holds its Den meetings and Committee meetings at Washington Open.



Pack 32 and Pack 43 team up for Memorial Day Remembrance
Members of the Cub Scout Packs along with several Girl Scout Siblings headed out to mark the graves of former service men and women with a flag as part of Memorial Day Remembrances.  Each flag was placed, saluted, and the service men and women were thanked for their service.


Pack 32 participates in National River Clean Up Day
As part of a national campaign, Pack 32 teamed up with scouts from Brownie Troop 60650 to clean a stretch of San Thomas Aquino Creek from Great America Parkway out to the Bay.  The Scouts and their families removed 250 pounds of trash from the banks of the water way including two wicker chairs and a portable radio.




Pack 32 collects food for those in need
On November 19, 2011, as part of the Boy Scouts of America's annual Scouting for Food drive, Cub Scout Pack 32 collected over 440lbs of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank. The Cub Scouts along with their leaders went out into their neighbourhoods to collect non-perishable food to be donated to benefit our local community.




Pack 32 Salutes America's Veteran's
Rain could not keep fifteen Cub Scouts from Pack 32, along with their families, from marching in San Jose's 93rd annual Verteran's Day Parade. Members of the Pack formed up near the San Jose Arena and marched east along Santa Clara St to Plaza de Cezar Chavez at Market St.  Following the parade the Scouts joined Veteran's at the Santa Clara American Legion post 419 hall for lunch and fellowship.





Pack 32 paints outdoor stage for Washington Open Elementary
On Aug 6, 2011 fifteen scouts and their families came out to Washington Open Elementary to repaint an outdoor stage and surrounding benches.  The Cub Scouts provided this service in appreciation for the use of the School's facilities throughout the school year.  Pack 32 holds its Den meetings and Committee meetings at the school.  The Scouts sanded and stripped the old paint, applied primer, then painted the new colors.  Pack 32 would like to thank Watten Painting, Milroy Construction, and Dunn-Edwards Paint on Winchester for donating paint and supplies to help make this event possible.

Pack 32 Hosts site for National River Clean Up Day
May 21, 2011 as part of National River Clean Up Day, Cub Scout Pack 32 hosted a creek clean up site near Great America and Tasman.  Thirty-six family members of Pack 32 along with Nineteen other community volunteers removed trash and debris from both banks of a 1.25 mile stretch of the creek.  In all 350 pounds of trash and 10 pounds of recyclables were removed, additionally countless golf balls were rescued and returned to the adjacent driving range.



Pack 32 presents the colors at a community event.
On April 30, 2011 Members of Pack 32 performed the opening flag ceremony for a community event being held at the Harris Lass House Museum.  Part of the festivities included this new flag be dedicated to all of the museum volunteers being raise for the first time over the museum.





Pack 32 collects shoes for the victims of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami
After learning that the Sport Chalet was collecting donations of gently worn shoes for the victims of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011, members of Pack 32 decided to pitch in.  Tiger Cub Den 4 led the effort collecting donations of over 200 pair of gently worn shoes. Donations were collected from Pack members as well as going door to door in their neighborhood.  The shoes were then gathered together and put into pairs before being taken to Sport Chalet on April 4th for donation and shipment to those in need.


Pack 32 helps feed the Hungry
On November 20, 2010, as part of the annual BSA Scouting for Food canned food drive, the Cub Scouts of Pack 32 collected 1,026 lbs of food (updated since original press release) for the Second Harvest Food Bank.  The food was collected by passing out notices the week before, then collecting the food left out by our neighbor, and by hosting a food collection barrel outside of Lucky's Supermarket for a few hours.  Scouts handed out a list of food items and asked patrons to consider making a purchase specifically for the purpose of donating to the food bank.

Pack 32 Honors America's Veterans
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (the anniversary of the end of World War I), Fifteen Cub Scouts from Pack 32, along with their families, gathered to join The American Legion Post 419 to honor America's Veterans. Members of the Pack formed up near the San Jose Arena and marched with The American Legion east along Santa Clara St to Plaza de Cezar Chavez at Market St in the 92nd annual San Jose Veteran's Day Parade.

Pack 32 Honors America's Fallen Heroes
On May 29, 2010 members of Cub Scout Pack 32, Cub Scout Pack 43, and Boy Scout Troop 394 fanned out across a Santa Clara Cemetery placing American flags at the head stone of those who served in the United States armed forces.  Each flag was placed with care, followed by the scout stepping back and saluting that fallen hero.  The American flags were provided by The American Legion post 419 of Santa Clara.  The scouts came back following the Memorial day weekend and collected the flags for next year.

Pack 32 Cleans a Creek
On May 15, 2010, as part of National River Clean Up Day, Cub Scout Pack 32 hosted a creek clean up site near Great America and Tasman.  This creek location is very close to wear the creek flows into the bay.  The scouts pulled 375lbs of trash and another 25lbs of recyclables from the creek.  Leading up to the event the scouts had learned how pollution in the creeks effects the bay, and learned about the cumulative effect of litter.  The scouts then partnered with the City of San Jose Watershed group to present this information to other scouts at the week before at Scout-o-Rama.  All scouts who participated in the creek clean up earned their BSA Conservation Good Turn awards.
