For all New Leaders

Being a part of the Pack180CT Leadership team, regardless of rank is rewarding and at the same time, challenging and so we put this Roadmap together to help make it easy as well.

Joining Night or Roundup

  • Attend a Joining Night or Roundup and volunteer to be a Den Leader or an Assistant Den Leader
    • As a Den, agree upon...
      • Den meeting schedule (e.g. what day, what time)
      • Where to hold the Den meetings (e.g. at a school at a house)
    • Gather up the email addresses of the adults in the den who will be the primary contact for the scouts in the den
    • It is very important to have both a Leader and Assistant Leader so make it a point to not leave the Joining and Roundup Nights until these Den Adults are agreed upon
  • Become familiar with...
  • Here are the primary items to be purchased, at the Scout Store, prior to the first Den meeting:
    • Shirt, initial pack patches, Hat and Manual
      • Each Adult purchases this for their scout
    • Neckerchief and Slide
      • For new scouts to the Pack, these are provided by the Pack at the first Pack meeting - for returning scouts, each Adult purchases these
    • Denner and Assistant Denner shoulder ribbon
      • Each Den Leader purchases these and can expense them back to the Pack

Prep for Your First Den Meeting

  • Prior to a leader being able to update the website, you will need to fill out the Acknowledgment online form.  Once you've done that, your site username and password will be emailed to you.
  • Update your Den email distribution list with the email information for the other adults in you den (you can do this prior to receiving your username and password)
  • Familiarize yourself with the rank and achievements you are working on with your Den for the upcoming year

  • Familiarize yourself with the Pack website
  • Fill out Scouting forms and return to the Cubmaster
    • This starts the process with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and starts your sons subscription to Boys Life magazine
    • Each year all Pack members will need to make their yearly registration payment at the first Pack meeting. 
    • For new members or new leaders, you will also need to fill out the Youth Application (for each scout) whereas returning members do not need to re-submit this application
  • Take Safety Training
  • Reserve the location for the Den Meetings
  • Update Pack Calendar with Den Meetings
  • Consider having a Adults Orientation meeting prior to the first Den Meeting
  • Look here for some additional Pack specific information regarding uniforms
  • Send out first email to the Den (using the where "#' is your Den #) and include the following:
    • Reminder about which Adult is Host Adult for which Month and that their responsibilities are listed here
    • Include a link to the Pack website at and mention that the Pack Calendar is on the home page
    • Include a link to the agenda to give them an idea on what to expect at Den meetings
    • Provide them a link to the nearest Scout Store

Your First Den Meeting

  • At this point refer to the specific Rank Roadmap for specific details

Updating the Site in order to provide ongoing communication to your Den and the Pack

  • Look here for how to make use of the website to help communicate information to your Den or to the Pack.  The site can be a great tool to use and also helps to reduce email which you may need to send while being a Leader.

      After the above steps, you will be well on your way so have fun, share great ideas and thanks again for being a key part of Pack 180!
