Term 1 focuses on writing opinions. Students develop writing their opinions on certain topics such as favorite flavor of ice cream, pet or season. It is important for them to develop a logical argument involving the "OREO" method. "OREO" is an acronym for helping the students remember to state one's opinion, give a reason, give an example to support the reason, and state their opinion again (restate in a different way). The goal is to have the students be able to present a 3 paragraph argument by the end of term 1.
