September 2017

Math -  Math test on Tuesday. We will review place value and rounding concepts including (the location of a number: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands) with 3 and 4 digit numbers, standard form (345), expanded form (300+40+5) and written form (three hundred forty-five). They will also work with the value of an underlined digit (452, the 5 has a value of 50). Also rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. Many of the students can also round to the 1,000 and 10,000 too!

Reading - In the Wonders Reading Program, the students will explore realistic fiction by reading "The Talent Show" and the "Experts Incorporated". Both made up stories involve children solving problems. Realistic fictional stories build the students' skills with setting, characters, as well as finding the problem and solution. We will spend 2 weeks working on this topic

Science - The students will explore different types of rocks including how metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous form.  This is part of our exploration of the Earth we live on.

Homework: The students will be given homework Monday through Thursday. Please make sure homework is a priority as it reinforces what was taught at school. It is helpful to establish a certain time every night to complete and review the work with your child. Please help your child develop responsible study habits, which includes putting their books and papers into their backpacks to be ready for school the next day.

Assignment Books: Each child has been given a homework folder and assignment book. These need to be signed by a parent or guardian every night and returned to school. This is a very important form of communication.

Lunch: We Lunch/Recess from 12:40 to 1:30.

Snacks: Students are welcome to bring a healthy snack which we will be having in the morning. They may also have a water bottle at their desk but no other types of drinks, please. Please do not send in peanut butter snacks.

Reminder: School and learning starts at 8:40.

I am very excited to have your child in my classroom and I look forward to a challenging and rewarding year full of fun. Please feel free to contact me either in the assignment book or by email at dstgermain@oxps.org.
