The Bonfire, 2013

posted Nov 7, 2013, 2:33 PM by Rich ‎(Oxford Touch)‎   [ updated Nov 7, 2013, 2:34 PM ]

Wild and windy, with flying gazebos, flying touches and flying scores, the Bonfire tournament on Saturday, once again, ended the touch year with a bang for us at Oxford. Despite the storm of the century (?!) last week, we are grateful that 11 visiting teams weren't put off. It was great to see so many old friends and the tournament newcomers, travelling from all over the UK, Scotland and even Switzerland to take part in what proved to be a cracking day out.

The pool stages (2 pools of 6 teams) kicked off promptly with some good wins, small losses and surprising draws with some great touch played by both old hands and newbies. Ten back to back rounds of 20 minute matches kept the refs warm and busy (huge thanks to Ian, Angela, Alice, David, Gary and Martin for stepping up as well as the player refs that allowed them to take a rest) as well as the players. The final standings saw Loughborough, Cambridge, Portsmouth and Ipswich fighting for the Bowl, Thames Valley Vikings, Manchester Chargers, Superhands and Oxford vying for the Plate, while Galaxy Jedi, Galaxy Warriors, Geezers and Wigan Warriors had their eyes on the Cup.

The knockouts saw Loughborough going to meet Cambridge in the bowl final, while Superhands and the Chargers went through. Then the two close-fought, and evenly matched, excellent Cup semi finals ended in drop offs with each side scoring 3 a piece. The Galaxy Knights eventually managed to put one past the Wigan Warriors getting them through to the Cup final, while, finally down to 3-a-side, the Geezers managed to break the Jedi defence.

With fading light and increasing wind, the Bowl final sent silverware to Cambridge in a 5-1 match and the same score line meant the Chargers took the Plate (they never leave without silverware). In the final match of the day an arm wrestle of a Cup final, saw some tense play, excellent defensive work and only one score in the 20 minutes, with Galaxy Knights managing to hold on to the lead to take the Cup.

As well as the refs, thanks to all of those that organised the tournament, gathered the teams and caught the flying gazebos. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

The Bonfire Report 2012

posted Nov 10, 2012, 3:00 AM by Rich ‎(Oxford Touch)‎   [ updated Nov 10, 2012, 3:02 AM ]

Another brilliant Bonfire tournament has rounded-off the competitive touch year for Oxford. It was the biggest Bonfire tournie yet, with 12 teams travelling 100s of miles from Scotland (thanks Superhands!) and all over England to take part. It was great to see so many new faces and new teams (Portsmouth, Loughborough Uni) mixed in with the more familiar (Galaxy, Cambridge, Manchester Chargers, Hot Custard, TV Vikings, Warwick Knights and Cranfield Uni). We look forward to seeing you all next season!

So, the chilly 3rd Nov started off early for the Oxford lot with many of the players and non-players coming to help set up at the dark and cold time of 07:30. Thanks to everyone at Oxford for their efforts! The day’s uber-refs (enormous thanks Tom, Shane, Cece, Martin, Lance and Nige) and the other teams started to arrive over the next couple of hours and we managed a prompt start – which everyone loved as the bitingly cold wind hadn’t dropped off.  The morning was packed with intense pool stages, a series of 20 minute games - one on, one off - which saw some excellent matches, tough matches and mud-laden matches (on the quickly deteriorating Pitch 1). After an exhausting few hours for everyone (not least the refs), the table going into the knockout rounds looked like this:

 Position Pool A Pool B
 1 Galaxy 1 Manchester Chargers
 2 Oxford Hot Custard
 3 TV Vikings Cambridge
 4 Superhands Galaxy 2
 5 Warwick Knights Loughborough Uni
 6 Cranfield Uni Portsmouth

After a very short break, allowing the good folk who were making sure the event ran smoothly (huge thanks Rich, Becky and Ian) time to write up results, we were in to the play-offs. The Bowl semi-finals saw Portsmouth beat Warwick 4-2, and new team Loughborough Uni win a very tight (4-3) drop-off against Cranfield Uni. Galaxy 2s beat TV Vikings 6-0 in the first Plate semi-final, and Cambridge overcame Superhands 6-3 in the second. The Cup semi-finals saw Hot Custard finish 4-3 up against Galaxy 1s and defending champions Manchester Chargers beat the tournament hosts 2-0.

The finals were set: first up, the Bowl final saw the two tournament newbies go head to head with southerners Portsmouth facing the young and vocal Loughborough Uni team. Portsmouth had a few experienced players in the squad and perhaps it was these that helped as they finally managed to see-off Loughborough in a well-fought 4-0 match. Meanwhile over on pitch 2, the Plate final had two familiar teams on the pitch – Cambridge v Galaxy 2 – with a smattering of experienced and new players bearing the cold on each side. After the 20 mins the tight game finally went 4-3 in Cambridge’s favour.

With all other matches over, it was left for the Cup final to conclude the tournament. Manchester Chargers returned as defending champions following their victory in a tightly fought drop-off final in 2011. The team planning to usurp them were night-out stalwarts Hot Custard. An intense match ensued entertaining all those sticking-out in the cold, with lots of action and great runs. At full-time the score was 2-2, so it was Bonfire déjà vu for the Chargers as they headed into another drop-off! A touchdown in the first six gave the Chargers the lead but Custard weren’t about to waste their right to reply. Another touchdown brought scores level, but in the ever-diminishing daylight, and ever-decreasing temperatures, it was Chargers who were able to fight their way through again. With only four players on the pitch for both sides, the Chargers managed to get one over the line! Title retained!

With the games over there was nothing left to do but shower, eat and present the goldware (yup we don’t do things by half in Oxford). Thanks so much to all who helped by organising their teams, providing the food, setting up, clearing up, running the day or in so many other ways (particularly our friends at GAB where we are lucky enough to host the occasion). A great time was had by all and we can't wait for Bonfire 2013!

Bonfire Tournament 2011. It's a Wrap.

posted Nov 10, 2011, 11:32 PM by Rich ‎(Oxford Touch)‎   [ updated Nov 10, 2011, 11:37 PM ]

Finally, the clearing up has finished, the last burnt out sparkler has been chucked away, and everyone has recovered from the tequila... What a tournie! It started early for the Oxford teams and the GAB men, who needed to help clear and set up the fields, but the tournament had started even earlier for our international friends from Switzerland and Scotland as well as the further parts of the UK who had all come to the city the night before. Brilliant effort guys and gals (especially the Oxford alumni Ali and Jen)!

Unfortunately we didn't get the blue sky and sunshine that November weekends aren't known for anyway - however it was at least clear and managed to stay that way. The refs arrived prepared for another full-on day (no surprises as Bruce, Martin and Tom had all graced us with their presence last year)... and we kicked off.

First up were the pool stages with two groups: Oxford I, Superhands, Cambridge, Geezers and Cranfield in Pool A, with Oxford II, Manchester Chargers, Thames Valley Vikings, Warwick Knights and Wigan Champions in Pool B. Over the series of 20 minute game times, some excellent matches, tough matches and grudge matches took place with, finally, the table going into the knockout rounds looking like this:

Pool B

1

Geezers

Manchester Chargers

2

Superhands

Thames Valley Vikings

3

Oxford I

Wigan Champions

4

Oxford II

5

Cranfield

Warwick Knights

To start the knockout stages, all of us not involved took a break to watch the Bowl Final. Without last years winners able to make the tournament this year, the Knights had their eye on the silverware they had missed out on. A tight play-off between the Knights and tournament newcomers, Cranfield saw the full time score at 1 a piece so we had our first drop off of the tournament. With no score in the first 6, it went back and forth between the two sides in a well-matched competition, until finally the Knights were able to draw it to a close and put one over the line. Sparklers all round.

Next up were the plate semis where there was an Oxford v Oxford club match and the young Champions facing the light blues. The Oxford2 game came out according to the form sheet with I managing to put a few scores past II, while, on pitch 1, Cambridge managed to get one more past the Champions in a game of 9 scores. The Plate final was set: Oxford I v Cambridge.

While the Plate finalists rested the Cup semis started up, with back to back matches for those that were to go through to the final - if you are going to win the Bonfire comp you have to work for it! In match 1, it was a Scots versus Chargers affair, while our Swiss friends were lined up against the local Vikings in match 2. Super hands they may have, but they were unable to get the ball over the line quite as many times as the effective Chargers approach giving the Chargers the win and route into the final. The Vikings also succumbed to the Geezers touch, conceding a single, but vital, touchdown in the 20 mins.

So the stage was set. Pitch 2 saw the Plate final with Oxford I desperate to keep some of the silverware in a Varsity play off, and the Cup match on Pitch 1 seeing the Chargers face the might of the Geezers. The Plate Final was a tightly fought match with both sides tiring from a long day of touch. In a reverse of fortunes from the matches last year however, Oxford were able to put 2 scores past the light blues and see off the Cambridge challenge. Plate Winners!

The Cup Final saw a sterling effort after a quick turnaround from the semis for both teams. This was a tough competition between two experienced sides full of international players but also starring a few newbies. Chargers, no doubt remembering the sting of losing the Plate final to the Vikings last year, were eager to perform on the grand stage, while the Geezers were hungry for their international trophy (especially if it meant showing Oxford friends and Swiss teammates Joe and Barney how it was done!). The floodlights on... just in case... the match started up. It was a close-fought half with one score a piece at half time. Obviously a tight match was in the offing. The team talks must have also matched as despite another 10 minutes going by neither team was able to score. We had our second drop-off in the tournament! Sparklers lit in the crowd, the light dimmed and the spectacle was set. The first 6 were over scoreless and it was anyone's, but the minutes ticked by. Player after player was dropped until we were down to the final 3 on 3. Chances came and went with some inspirational defending on both sides however one team had to give. Finally Charger Johnny was able to make a break for the line and score. 2-1!

An excellent day was followed by some swift showers and then much wanted food in the GAB clubhouse. Some teams set off but for those that stayed a tequila fuelled night out in Oxford awaited... around there the recollection ends!

Thanks so much to all who helped by organising their teams (particularly our Joe and our friends Ali, Jen, Nick, Gregg, Dan, Joe, Meghan, Will and Jonny), refereeing, providing the food, setting up, clearing up, running the day or in so many other ways... We hope all the new players the teams christened will be on the pitches next year and we look forward to seeing our old friends around. A great time was had by all and we can't wait for Bonfire 2012!!
