Wing Chun is a logical and scientific martial art which uses principles of physics and biomechanics to teach students how to defend themselves effectively in real-life self defense situations. In a few words, Wing Chun is: simple, effective and brutal. Because of its practicality it is effective irrespective of the persons size and strength. Training in the art of Wing Chun Kung Fu brings confidence and an understanding of your own body and where power lies within.
The common legend involves the young woman Yim Wing Chun (Wing Chun literally means forever springtime or praising spring) at the time after the destruction of the Southern Shaolin and its associated temples by the Qing government. After Wing Chun rebuffs the local warlord's marriage offer, he says he'll rescind his proposal if she can beat him in a martial art match. She asks a Buddhist nun- Ng Mui, who was one of the Shaolin Sect survivors, to teach her boxing; this still nameless style enables Yim Wing Chun to defeat the warlord. She thereafter marries Leung Bac-Chou and teaches him the style, which he names after her.
Perhaps what interests people most is that Wing Chun, unlike traditional Chinese Martial Arts, is characterised by economical movements, simple and direct short-range simultaneous attack and defence hand techniques, as well as powerful low kicks. These movements are simple yet effective tools in real-life combat situations.
Wing Chun Kung Fu has a long history in China but it has only gain recognition about 50 years ago when Grandmaster Ip Man revealed the techniques in Wing Chun and began to teach openly in Hong Kong. Wing Chun became popular around the world when Ip Man’s most famous student, Bruce Lee, became a hit in the United States and promoted Chinese Kung Fu to different parts of the world. More significantly, Bruce Lee openly admitted that his Wing Chun trainings had given him a strong foundation in his creation of Jeet Kune Do.
Ip Man’s life as well as Wing Chun Kungfu has also been recently featured in Ip Man, Ip Man 2 and The Legend is Born: Ip Man.
