In musical memory of Mr. Schortgen...

posted Dec 15, 2016, 7:10 AM by Douglas Olenik

We, the O-G Titan Band community, are deeply saddened with the loss of one of our long-time assistant band directors, Mr. Ken Schortgen.

While I have only been here for one year, I very quickly realized the importance this community has placed on its band directors; they have touched so many lives over the years.  Mr. Schortgen was certainly no exception.

It was a honor to get to know him while I could, we conversed several times in the community band.  It was great to learn about the band program over his long span while he was a part of it.  Mr. Schortgen will always be remembered musically, as the introduction to our OGHS Fight Song was created by him (and we still play it to this day!).  Our fight song is a common one, it comes from Washington and Lee University (known as the "Washington and Lee Swing")...many many band programs all over the country use it.  But ours is uniquely "O-G" thanks to the introduction he wrote for our school!

Mr. Schortgen was also a huge part of forming the "Titan Brass" with Mr. Louis Breece.  The marching ensemble that featured an all-brass wind section, percussion section, and guard section was met with high acclaim, doing quite well in contests and performances.  Currently, the O-G Band isn't all-brass for various reasons, but the sound of the group is in the hearts and minds of the student performers to this day!

For our 2016 Holiday Concert on December 13th, the OGHS High School Concert Band performed "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl in honor of Mr. Schortgen.

For the many who have requested, you can contribute to a scholarship fund in honor of Mr. Schortgen by mailing your contribution to the high school.  Checks should be made out to "OG Band Boosters" and write, "Mr. Schortgen Band Scholarship" in the memo.  You are welcome to e-mail Mr. Olenik at olenik.d@ottawaglandorf.org for any questions you may have.

Thank you Mr. Schortgen!

Ottawa Christmas Parade

posted Nov 25, 2016, 9:28 AM by Douglas Olenik

We are 8th in the Ottawa Christmas Parade lineup, so we will be near the front of the lineup.  Below is a map, please look at the map to see where you can park...though I'm sure you all will figure it out (carpooling will help!).  Our lineup area is at the intersection of Pratt Street and 4th Street.

ARRIVE @ 1:15 to 1:30 at the lineup area - IN UNIFORM with instruments.  The parade begins at 2:00 SHARP!  Give yourself a little extra time to get to the lineup area, which again is at the Pratt Street and 4th Street intersection.

8th Grade - You do NOT have to march in Sunday's parade.  We are playing a Christmas arrangement that the high school looked at in class.  If you would like to march, stop by the high school BEFORE 1:00 to pick up the music.  You can use a flip folder!  It is not a difficult song, you will probably be playing the whole thing by the end of the parade :)

BIG Week for OG Bands!

posted Sep 14, 2016, 7:22 AM by Douglas Olenik   [ updated Sep 14, 2016, 9:22 AM ]

This Thursday (Sept 15th) @ 7:30pm is the first 5th grade band meetings
Instrument Care Center will be here to help our new students with getting their instruments

If the 5th grade parents can't make this meeting, then they can attend...

Monday, September 19th @ 7:00pm with Rettig Music

5th grade parents and students do NOT have to attend both meetings - just pick the one that is most convenient for you.  Both meetings will be in the OGHS Band Room.

This Friday (September 16th) is the home game against Celina - and our 7th/8th grade band is playing halftime with the high school band!

- Students in the 7th and 8th grade band need to be READY to play by 5:45 on Friday...which means they need to be there a few minutes beforehand to prepare themselves.
- High School Band students are also to be READY TO PLAY by 5:45 on Friday!

7th/8th grade band students need to wear any O-G shirt (or sweatshirt if it's chilly!), and jeans or khaki pants or shorts are fine if it's warm.  Why doesn't the junior high have band shirts?  Because no one told me I needed to get them! :P  So, O-G Titan apparel is just fine.

This Saturday is the 23rd Annual Parade of Bands!!!

We have 11 schools participating including O-G.  The National Anthem will be played by O-G at 5:00pm.

O-G High School Titan Marching Band students have rehearsal at 1:00pm.  Then they will need to be IN UNIFORM and READY TO PLAY and meet in the band room at 4:30pm.  National Anthem at 5:00pm.  The O-G band will step-off for competition at 8:30pm, and need to be IN UNIFORM and READY TO PLAY at 7:30pm in the band room, we meet our host at 7:40pm.

Here's the full schedule:

5:00 - National Anthem by OGHS
5:15 - Lincolnview Jr/Sr High School
5:30 - Liberty Benton High School
5:45 - Kalida High School
6:00 - Paulding High School
