What a lot of learning has been going on. Our second and third grade buddies helped us create slide shows about things we learned on our topics. Click here to view the slide shows. The children got together last week to view the shows and celebrate all of our learning.
Winter is here. The year has been going fast. This trimester we will be looking at science inquiry. The students have learned about the jobs of scientists and selected topics that they would like to learn more about. We spent some time in the library selecting books to read with our 2nd and 3rd grade buddies during enrichment time. We will explore the books we borrowed, some Tumblebooks (contact me for username and password to view at home), and also some videos to help us learn more and then we will share our learning with others. Check back to see what we have learned about these topics.
We are in the middle of winter and the middle of the school year. This winter has been a snowy, cold, and windy one. We recently celebrated the 100th day of school with fun activities in math classes. We have grown in so many ways this year. One of our greatest areas of growth are in reading and writing. Students have embraced the writers notebook and are using it on a daily basis to record their thoughts about a wide number of topics and subjects. Our literacy groups are working on increasing their stamina for reading. We have been using a variety of strategies to help us with decoding words and understanding what we are reading. :) Ms. Pollard
During our weather and climate unit the children learned about the tools meteorologists use to forecast the weather. They practiced videotaping a partner using iPads as they told about the tools they used and gave a weather forecast using the same. We visited the Fairbanks Museum with the primary unit (K to 3) and were able to see the tools they use and talk with a real meteorologist. We culminated our unit with students creating a weather report for a real location that they chose. Check the link below to view those reports. :) Ms. Pollard
Each year is an exciting journey of learning and growing with the students. This year my excitement starts with a mixed grade class of kindergarten and first grade students and a chance to work with colleagues in a primary unit model with kindergarten through third grade students. Look for news as the year unfolds.
Check out the sidebar to get additional information about specific activities that you want to learn about. There are also a set of links to sites that support student learning.
One of my goals is to integrate the use of technology more into the classroom and you will see examples of these attempts on our site. Each year I learn a little more about technology and teaching as I work with and learn from my students. Thank you to the families who share their children with me!
Enjoy yourself as you take a look around and thank you for visiting this site. :) Ms. Pollard
July 2014Summer is here and the weather has been glorious. I hope you are all enjoying time spent outdoors with family and friends. I have been gardening, reading, mowing the lawn, volunteering at the library, and relaxing with my son, Corey, and our pets. I am getting ready to begin setting up the classroom in the next few weeks. We will be having an open house on Wednesday, August 13th for new kindergarten families. Look for a letter with specific times in the next two weeks. I am looking forward to seeing you all soon. :) Ms. Pollard
