Inspiring Children

Read to Feed inspires children to get involved in a real hands-on way to help solve global problems like hunger and poverty. Children are asked to get sponsors for each minute they read during the month of March. The goal is to raise money to donate for Heifer International Programs. The money will buy gifts of livestock, seeds, and education for caring for these resources, for struggling families who have few resources and need an ongoing source of income. These gifts help families move away from poverty and toward self-reliance.
Each sponsor sets a pledge amount for every minute your child reads – a nickel, dime, quarter or a dollar, or any desired amount, or makes a flat pledge.
Children collect their pledges and pool their money. Calendars and money are due on or before Friday, April 6. Empty Bowls is an all-district event on Wednesday, May 2 at OHS. OIS will present our total minutes read and total money collected at the presentation that night. Checks should be made payable to: Osceola School District – Read to Feed or pay online on this site.
Read to Feed is an exciting adventure for children. Along the way, they learn many important lessons. They learn about different cultures around the world and learn the importance of using the earth’s resources wisely. They learn the value of self-reliance. Maybe more important, they learn that they can make a difference in the world.
As they work toward their reading goals, children will be participating in various school wide activities as incentives and encouragement to keep reading. We appreciate your encouragement and support of your child while they participate in Read to Feed. It will not require much time on your part, but will mean less fortunate children around the world will have an ongoing source of food, perhaps an opportunity to go to school – and hope for a better tomorrow!
