Backlighting. Most times when you are taking pictures you want the sun either behind you or off to the side.  When you put the sun in front of the camera and your subject in the foreground, your subject will become a silhouette because you are taking the photo from the shadow side.  This effect is known as backlighting.  Here are some tips and examples from other photographers.
