Ms. Benjamin - 6th Grade Social Studies Room 217
Dear students and parents,
Welcome to Orono Middle School and sixth grade social studies.   I hope that you had a summer full of fun memories.  I spent much of my summer visiting family and relaxing.   I am anticipating an exciting school year filled with fun, laughter, and of course a love of learning.  I feel renewed and am anxious to start the new school year.

My name is Melissa Benjamin and I have been teaching at Orono Middle School for over twenty years.  Since coming to Orono, I’ve taught sixth grade science, sixth grade history, eighth grade speech, and seventh grade geography.  I love teaching 6th grade history!

I have an undergraduate degree in elementary education with certifications in middle school social studies, speech, and theatre arts from Mankato State University.  I also hold a Master’s degree in Learning Technology and Human Development from the University of St. Thomas.

I live in Plymouth with my two cats Homer, and Lola and often some foster dogs as well.  Photography, making jewelry, traveling, fostering rescue dogs and spending time with my family are activities that I enjoy.

I am looking forward to an exciting and successful school year.
Sincerely,
Ms. Benjamin

6th Grade MN History Pass

All Minnesota sixth graders are eligible to receive a 6th Grade MN History Pass from MNHS. The pass gives Minnesota sixth graders free admission to all 26 MNHS historic sites and museums during non-school hours for the entire year that the student is a sixth grader. The pass is good for an unlimited number of visits. Parents, guardians and educators can request passes at mnhs.org/education or at MNHS historic sites and museums. The pass does not apply to field trips or to guests accompanying a sixth grader.

“Minnesota has about 70,000 sixth graders, and we can think of nothing better than welcoming each and every one of them to our historic sites and museums all year long,” said Lory Sutton, chief marketing officer. “Visiting the places where history happened is a powerful way to enhance classroom learning, while having a great time with your friends and family.”
