Professional Development

The Orono Schools has a strong history of professional development in literacy. The table illustrates the focus of professional development for K-5 teachers in literacy for the last eight years. Additionally, Literacy specialists provide training in specific practices, e.g. running records. In the summer, staff is paid to attend professional development in balanced literacy and research based best practice (e.g. PLC Institute with the DuFours, Guided reading, Reader’s Workshop, Words Their Way, Writer’s Workshop, Common Formative Assessment, etc.) During teacher workshop, Literacy specialists or outside consultants meet with staff to provide training in specific strategies or instructional practices (e.g. Early Intervention in Reading, Writer’s Workshop, common formative assessments, deconstructing standards and identifying power standards, etc.)
