K-12 Assessment Plan K-5 Assessment Practices Assessment Tools Outcome Data

Comprehensive assessment practices include a variety of tools and processes that provide both formative and summative feedback to teachers, administrators, students, parents, and the community . At the classroom level, the primary purpose of literacy assessments are to inform instruction for the purpose of screening, diagnosis, and/or progress monitoring. The following summaries describe these purposes (Source: Minnesota Department of Education, 2011)

Screening Assessments: Quick and efficient measures of overall ability and critical skills known to be strong indicators that predict student performance. Screening of all students at regular intervals helps to establish expected proficiency outcomes and informs program effectiveness.

Diagnostic Assessments: Diagnostic assessments provide additional data beyond screening and are administered when diagnostic information will offer new or more reliable data about a student’s academic needs. Using diagnostic assessments can provide specific information about the needs of individual learners and help plan for strategic intervention for groups of learners with similar needs.

Progress Monitoring Assessments: Progress monitoring assessments are brief, but are administered more regularly than screening and diagnostic tools. Progress monitoring tools provide information about student progress on the continuum of learning and grade level outcomes. Data can be used to monitor progress for the purpose of individual and small group intervention and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
