2018 Team Information

COACH
INFORMATION

A message from Coach Barb and Coach Patty:

The 2018 Orono Girls’ Tennis season is weeks away.  We think this team has the skill, work ethic, and drive to make it to the state tournament.  There are challenges ahead; exciting ones and problematic ones. We will be working to figure out how to balance a high achieving Varsity with an overflowing JV feeder program.  As you read this email regarding summer tennis, tryouts and the season schedule, you will notice some changes from the way we have done things in the past. It is going to be an exciting ride that will require full commitment from players, parents and coaches.

SUMMER:

Your responsibilities over the summer are to make sure you are fit, you have developed and improved tennis skills, and have played sets and matches (goal of 100 sets).  To help you out, we are very excited to announce that Jack Roach will be conducting a summer tennis program for us.

Some of Jack's career highlights include:

  • Director of Tennis, Interlachen Country Club, Edina for 25 years
  • Head Coach, University of Minnesota Women's Tennis Team, 4 years
  • Head Coach Minneapolis Edison High School
  • Head Coach Kellogg High School, Roseville, MN
  • Head Coach Holy Family High School
  • Tennis Professional at Northwest Racquet Club for over 20 years
  • Head Tennis Professional at Minnekahda Country Club for 4 years.

Jack is a USPTA Certified Professional, graduated from Macalester College on a tennis scholarship and received his Masters in Education from St. Cloud State. Jack has served as a past president of both the Northern Section of the USTA and the USPTA and is a member of the Minnesota Tennis Hall of Fame.

A flyer with the details and registration form was emailed out.  Please note that payment and registration is with Jack, not with us.  The camp curriculum is set for each day of the summer.  Can’t come to all of it because of vacation or job?  There is flexibility to come when you can (one day per week is better than none).  You will need to send us an email by 2:00 Sunday afternoon prior to each week with the days you will be attending so we can staff appropriately (or you can send the days now and be assured of getting into the days you want).  Varsity and Junior Varsity will have separate sessions.  The Varsity daily session will be limited to 8 players per day.  The Junior Varsity daily session will be limited to 16 players per day.

FALL SPORTS NIGHT:

This is usually held the week before tryouts.  The date has not yet been set.

In addition, any player that intends to try out for a VARSITY position can not miss any days of tryouts and must be available from August 13 - October 26, Monday - Saturday (except for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3).  Juniors & Seniors, schedule your SAT and ACT tests appropriately (next SAT is June 2, and ACT is June 9).  Seniors, do not schedule your Senior Portraits during our season.
