Orono Challenge

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.  Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.

High Potential Services

Goals of the Orono Challenge Program

  1. Students will acquire and apply advanced knowledge and skills.

  2. Students will be able to appreciate their own strengths and weaknesses.

  3. Students will exhibit that they are socially and psychologically adaptable.

  4. Students will be able to think independently and be self-directed learners and creative problem solvers.

Array of Services

Challenge Specialists work in conjunction with classroom teachers to provide a continuum of services including:

  • Differentiated instruction within classrooms

  • Classroom cluster grouping by readiness

  • Short-term pull-out groups focused on critical & creative thinking

  • Year long pull-out groups in mathematics & English language arts

  • Advanced, accelerated and/or enriched courses in various subject areas

  • Social-emotional support and guidance

Guidelines for Placement

The Orono School District identifies students requiring Challenge services via an ongoing, multidimensional screening process including classroom performance on summative measures, standardized test data, teacher observations, and individual learning characteristics including those that are directly observed and/or self, parent, teacher reported.  This allows for flexibility and responsiveness to student needs.
